The mixed reviews are mainly because the game critics can't get GTA out of their head. Putting the lack of content in the world aside, the Gamespot review cited that it has an excellent story and equally impressive game mechanics shared between shooting, driving and stealth.
I'm annoyed at the remarks about the open world. Do we really need all these gimmicks that are fun to try once? Buying clothes and stuff like in San Andreas? I for one do not care about this. I am interested in the narrative. I have found that the more open a game is the looser its storytelling becomes.
You should get Mafia 2 for what it is.
I am not looking for a GTA. I am looking for something with a good story and atmosphere thats why it caught my eye.
Haveyou played the original and enjoyed it, thenyes you should definetly get it! I actually havn't played the full game but I did play the demo and from what I experienced it was pretty decent. The driving was great, the shooting was pretty good. I like how you have a garage to store cars and also a little small thing but if you are going to fast a cop will chase you :P An also it has a great story! Also very good voice acting! GET IT! Its not entirely like GTA
If you do, save yourself $10 and get it from Direct2Drive and use coupon code "SchoolSucks". You still need Steam but it'll save you some money.LevrarYes, do it. I was on the fence but I'm glad I bought it.. played it for a couple hours tonight and so far it's everything I hoped for.
I hear it's heavy on story, with not enough action. But when there is action to be had, it's epic. If I didn't already have a lot of games to play and finish, I would grab this up easily. It will probably have to wait but it's definitely a future purchase.
New best game of all time for me. MAFIA I was before. The only people that dont like this game are,a, never played the first one, b, expect every open map game to be like GTA. Sure I love the GTA games too. But no other game trulysubmerses you in the era and world like MAFIA II. Superb!
Well you won't find anything better in September, so yes. Go get it.CrimsaderWHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT! Civ 5, Halo Reach, Darksiders, Dead Rising 2, Borderlands: Claptrap's robot revolution, etc.

Isn't Mafia just like GTA4? An open world with nothing to do except for the storyline missions?

Mafia 2 has great story, the atmosphere is very good and really makes you feel like you are in the 40s-50s. overall a great game, I highly recommend it, awesome graphics also.
The story is really the only exceptional aspect of the game. Everything else is decent, borderline poor. I say wait for a price drop.mo0ksiCare to elaborate on what was borderline poor about Mafia 2? I know we're only basing things off of a the demo but I'm just curious! :P :D
I say no... I am regretting my purchase... The game is only about 9-10 hours long... And that is taking your time... There is nothing to go back for apart from collectibles... I finished the game and I really have like no "want" to go back and play it again right now...

Well I took my time, making well placed shots, listening to all dialogue, running around randomly everywhere looking for all the playboys in the chapter... I finished the game and Steam says I have 9 hours played... And I have all but 7 of the playboys from doing that...

GTA 4 has lots of extra stuff to do.. it may be dumb stuff, but it IS there.Care to elaborate on what was borderline poor about Mafia 2? I know we're only basing things off of a the demo but I'm just curious! :P :D Well first of all, I just want to say that I'm playing it on 360, and I'm indeed enjoying the game. But it has a direction that makes the game lack some identity. It would be very easy for one to think of this game as a sandbox, and end up underwhelmed at the end, but there's still fun to be had. Really with the way the story is set up, it wouldn't be as engaging if it was taken with a sandbox approach. That said, the story is what holds everything together. It's told well, and it just elevates the game's entire presentation, making you feel involved in the times as they go by, and making the world feel very authentic. Personally it's the one thing that will give you the desire to play until the end. The soundtrack is also really fantastic, and it's cool on how it changes up as the years go by. So what's the problem? Well there's a fair amount of menial, boring tasks. Fist fights are fun, but they're always the same. The gunplay is just poor, with level design that can be confusing, AI that's stupid on both fronts, no real feedback from the weapons and a cover system that can make simple things frustrating. I won't speak on the visuals as you're probably getting it on the PC. But in case you're wondering the 360 version is tolerable at best visually. There's fairly significant pop-in, a very inconsistent framerate, and horrible aliasing. It still manages to look okay though. It's solid, but nothing you'll remember in the years to come.[QUOTE="mo0ksi"]The story is really the only exceptional aspect of the game. Everything else is decent, borderline poor. That's no problem because when i finish this game it's time to go back playing MP on SC2 MwahahaI say no... I am regretting my purchase... The game is only about 9-10 hours long... The hand to hand fights are great. Almost as good as Fight Night 4 of course not as complex but similar moves. The gun play is great on PC. I do play any gun scenes with a controller. I am using my 360 controller for the majority of the game but when a gun level comes up, I put down the controller and use a KB+m... The way ALL games should be played.
So far the only valid complaint I am hearing from anyone is that it's short. That is disappointing. I'm just on Chapter 8 so I have not experienced that yet. As far as needing more to do via sandbox… who cares? Like someone pointed out the "extra" crap in GTA4 is 90% stupid anyway. It does not bother me at all that MAFIA 2 doesn't let you go bowling, or walk around a strip club, all that kind of crap in GTA4 was boring after you did it once anyway.
So far it's a perfect game. Let's just hope they come out with an EP soon and then it will solve the problem of being too short. If they are smart they will have a Mafia II EP by Xmas.
YES. I would give the game a 10 if it weren't for all the driving, which bumps it down to a 9.5 IMO. The story is fantastically presented in a fitting atmosphere.shakmaster13
I love all the driving!!! That is what MAFIA is all about, was in the first game too. You have to have a controller on your PC for this game because of that. In Chapter 7 when you're driving from the strip club to bury the body and your drunken buddies are singing along to the Elvis song on the radio!!! This is AWSOME!! Fantastic voice acting, it's not just for a few seconds it goes for like the full 4 min song.
That example right there is what MAKES Mafia so great! The characters and voices acting are just amazing, so well done, makes you feel so much like you are really there! I really cannot say enough about that. I have NEVER played another game that does this as well as this game. Absolutely brilliant!!!!
i agree with everyone, the game is great.I enjoyed it a lot but it took me 8-9 hours to complete and there isnt much replayability imo. Aside from the playboy mags.. those are nice :D Anyways! Its kinda hard to answer. The story is fantastic and so is the action. A simple rent wouldnt do the game justice because in my opinion the console version just dont cut it. I loved the story and the scenery was an amazing backdrop for it. I dont know if its because of the amazing graphics on PC or what.
verdict: Dont have an answer. :( The story is above great. Action is good. The only drawback for me was the 8-9 hour playtime. It would be a definite rent if the graphics were as good on consoles as they are on PC.

It's cool and all but at some points it just gets frustrating going all the way to the opposite side of empire bay, then having to trek all the way back to Joe's.Despite having a great story - that's all there is. If you want a game that you will be actively playing, then Mafia 2 will not deliver. The whole game is more of a errand boy mission after mission (and you cannot pick and choose what missions, either). You will finish it in about 10 hours, so it will not take you through September. Unless your really hard up to play it, I would suggest finding another game with a longer amount of gameplay. There are some fanboys idolatrizing over the story, but the story really doesn't make up for the extreme lack of gameplay.
I'd say no.
I played the demo, the game play felt too chunky and clunky. The world looked interesting, felt like a trip to the past with really nice looking backgrounds of NY city. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the game has a nice atmosphere. The whole "playing a movie" thing really turned me off though.
It might have a good stroy but it's probably not as good as Goodfellas or Casino, and you you are playing this game to watch a movie then you'd probably enjoy Goodfellas more.
EDIT: I'd like to add that if the price of this game was brought down significantly to maybe $20 then it might be worth it.
Yeah, I agree. Get it for what it is; a mediocre game with good voice actors.
Find me a game that has a narrative as strong as Goodfellas - thats a ridiculous expectation.I'd say no.

I would say whether you get it or not depends on whether you like a good story. I've played few for about 20 minutes and I think the story is exceptional for a PC game of this type so far, its as good as the original Mafia story (which to be honest was the glue of the original).
Shooting is about average, can't comment on fist fights etc but the graphics deserve a mention. Good engine with nice looking graphics that don't slow the whole system down, but to me this is just field dressing (gameplay more important)
I usually dislike cover systems, as they are usually ways of making a console shooter playable considering the limitations of a joypad, but I actually do like the cover system in Mafia 2 as its a bit more natural. They thought about the camera / viewing angle when you go into cover so you can only see what you could realistically see when looking around that corner, instead of just tilting the camera to the left / right and looking as though you just glued yourself to the wall.
But again, the story is probably the most exceptional thing about it. If you can bare it I would wait until its cheaper and then its a bit like playing an interactive well written novella (Which is what I thought about Max Payne 1 / 2 when they came out)

Of course the storytelling isn't going to be as strong. The mediums haven't caught up with each other. Its not a fair comparison.I'd say no.

Yes, the gunplay was quite enjoyable. Felt like a .. like a 1950s gangster film. What's so mediocre about it? Gunplay is great
Really? Fist fights were easy, boring and cheap. "Hold space to become invincible".fist fights are great,
The driving mechanics were great, the car variety was great. The actual driving? Fun for the first few minutes, then you realize it's just a way for the developers to extend the game length. There was never anything exciting going on while driving, just getting form point A to point B. It's not a GTA style sandbox and yaddayadda, doesn't matter as it wasn't a fun part of the game. It's my main gripe with it, while it was cool back when 3d big cities wasn't common that's just not enough today. If they don't want to offer anything other than "Drive fast and cops might chase you", why the hell would I do it? Add to that, money was useless. Sure, you could get some car upgrades but that felt tacked on. "Upgrade engine, upgrade handling". Buying clothes and guns wasn't useful either, robbing the gun store simply involved pressing E fast then running out. The cops were dumb, to say the least. I never felt threatened by the police in the game, except when I went stupid and got wanted with a terrible car.driving is great
I found nothing incredible about the story. Nothing at all. There were a few things I didn't see coming completely, but I was never too baffled. It worked, but I don't see why it gets all the praise.story is incredible
They definitely hit the nail on the head with the atmosphere, and yeah the presentation was amazing. I was surprised at how well it ran while looking that good, coupled with great voice acting all the way through. Sounds like I loved the game now, but while it definitely had its' good parts I overall didn't really enjoy my playthrough. The "hard" difficulty wasn't hard except for some really cheap parts (One area with no cover and a lot of molotovs at the docks, you'll know what I mean if you've played it). I tried it a lot to find out some good strategy, but then I realized I should just focus fire on one of the guys and it's done within a couple of seconds. Ehh.atmosphere is great, presentation and characters are great, etc.
I didn't enjoy the driving, it was tedious at best. The cops didn't really provide anything at all to the games, and while the gunfights were fun there was far too much time spent doing nothing at all. The plot was uninteresting, though the voice acting/presentation was well made. And yeah, as you said the atmosphere was incredible. They just forgot to make the 'game' portion fun and varied. There were also a lot of outdated design ideas that added nothing to the game. "Drive to 5 gas stations before midnight, we made sure to spread them out all over the town". It wasn't hard, nor was it fun. It was tedious and I just wanted to get past it. All in all I found it mediocre, I know that I'll never replay this game.
VfanekI'll agree on the lack of variation between most missions, and how tedious the driving got. But I most certainly wouldn't call this game mediocre in any regards. You are right about money being useless though. The only time I robbed stores and took cars to Bruskie was when I needed to make the $27,500.
