Hi there! I'm looking for a good upgrade since my 4870 is beginning to struggle with the latest games. I noticed that the 6870 only costs 1650KR (About 250$), so I figured I could get that but I'm not too sure if I'll see a big improvement in performance.

Here's my current config: Radeon 4870, Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHz, 4GB DDR2 and GA-MA790X-UD3P mobo (With a S-ATA 7200RPM 320GB)

Would I see an improvement if I got the 6870?

Yes, there would be a substantial improvement.

I went from the 4870 (512mb) to the 6870 back around Christmas and really like it :) Having DX11 is really nice and it does run games quite a bit faster. The price does stink though.. here in the US the 6870's are $200 cards.

A 6970 costs 2880SEK (440$), it's too expensive for me :( But I think I'll get the 6870, it seems like a good card.

Maybe think about buying an after market cooler for your CPU and overclocking it aswell, that would get you some extra peformance.

I've already got one :) It's at a steady 35-45 degrees celsius.

And you know how much "we" who dont live in US get in payment for a month of hard work, how much "we" pay in tax and how much "we" pay for our living? Your comment is filled with ignorance!

Yeah, the economical difference is quite big. The average paycheck lies between 16 000 - 25 000 SEK (2 442 $ - 3 816 $), and the average percentage of tax is about 48% of the income. The taxes are pretty damn crazy, but we get quite a lot from it like free healthcare et cetera...

Wow your rig is almost the exact same as mine. I wouldn't get that though. Sure, there would be an improvement, but look at it like this: You can still run games well now, and that $250 is only going to slightly improve your games. If you wait a year or two, that $250 will go a longer way.

Slightly improve?

Either you are underestimating the HD 6870 or overestimating the HD 4870.

How many more frames would you expect? I would guess like 20... but in a year that money will go way further.

in a year all our money will go much further in computer hardware lol that's the nature of PC parts to begin with, anyway, jumping from the 4xxxx series to the 6xxxx series will be a very nice improvement! if u can squeeze out the extra cash I'd go for a 69xx series card or a gtx 570

Yes, obviously, but it's not as if he is purchasing a card when he doesn't already have one. Does it make sense to buy a new card a month after you buy it? I think the amount of time between cards should be greater in order to save money and/or get better performance.

It varies a bit depending on the same but it should be about 40-60% improvement. I consider that a good improvement.

Alright, the choice is between the 6870 vs the 6950 (I can't afford the 6970). Obviously the 6950 is faster, but is it worth the extra cash? the 6870 costs 1500SEK and the 6950 costs 2000-2300SEK. 225$ vs 300$. I also heard that you can flash the 6950 software to make it into a 6970, is this something worth looking into? (I am quite technical so I should be able to pull it off) Or is it simply too risky? I don't want to end up destroying an expensive card. I'm sorry for all the questions, but I'm a student so I have to spend my money wisely :) .

OFC you need to spend your money wisely as you pay 48% of your income in tax'es. (That is about 10-15% higher than the rest of residents in sweden does, and the salary starts from about 18k and up to endless. ;) ) The HD6870 seems like the wise thing to go with as the price difference is rather large to the HD6950 from the places your willing to buy from. You shouldn't buy a HD6950 and think thats a HD6970, many of them were possible to unlock to a full HD6970 but today most are not able to, you'll need a refference card (radeon HD6950 2GB) to begin with and most don't follow the ref. design, and then you'll need one with the BIOS switch to act as a failsafe during your attempt to flash it to a HD6970, and you'll need a good amount of luck to find one able to even have working units in HD6970's speed. I wouldn't base my HD6950 buy on making it a HD6970, but if it does end up as a HD6970 its great.

i agree with @swehunt i recently built a new rig and was looking into that 6950 -> 6970 flash deal...but they've pulled pretty much all those cards off the market and AMD has locked those shaders so flashing the BIOS is pretty much out of the question :( i would go with 6870, don't underestimate the value of these 6 series cards, 6870 will suit your needs very nicely and save some cash so you can Xfire down the road if you need to (and your PSU supports it)

That seems reasonable. I'll get the 6870 then, thanks for all the answers! :)
