Ok well let me explain so you guys get an idea. I need a new computer for Animation and my Academics. I want to order a 20" Mac along with a $240 Adobe Animation program. Now here is the problem. The Macs are excellent in quality and creativity performance, but this is a computer that I will have for the next 4-5 years and on ANY day of those five years, if I crave to play a game, I dont really have any options. I dont play alot, but sometimes I like to play on an hour break to relieve myself from stress but all the games I play on PC, are not available on Mac. But I also need a good computer to animate. I built a custom PC on cyberpowerpc.com and it cost me $1113 (including vista 64 bit) and its a garantee that it would run Crysis (example) on Ultra High. I could probably be cheaper in the end. But I dont know if the PC has that creativity/artistic aspect as a Mac has, but the Mac doesnt live up to the gaming world's performance and high end needs. what should I do? I wish there was a Pac that could do more. Someone should create Pacs

Get a PC. Theyre cheaper and more capable.

Macs have their purposes, but its just pointless imo getting one unless you've been using one for years.

And forgive my ignorance, but what makes a mac better for multimedia? Is the software Mac-exclusive or something? Or is it just something that for some weird reason macs have a good reputation regarding. I know a lot of people that have two computers, one mac and one PC, simply because they prefer doing video work on macs.

If your gonna get a mac lets get a misconception out of the way, there is no difference between a windows pc and mac except for the os. So build a computer cheap and just buy the mac osx if you want it that badly. However I would stick with windows because of better support and the windows software is (in my biased opinion) the better choice because its cheaper and is just as effective. Good luck on getting a computer, both will do your gaming needs fine but with mac you are just restricted more than a windows pc.

ok so since we have it out of the way. A $240 (originally $899) animation program would run smoothly and perfectly on a windows pc if I order it from Apple.com?

I never heard of "Adobe Animation" neither for windows or mac

There is Adobe Flash which is used for animation, but you dont need mac to work in it

I have made lot animations with Flash, and im using windows.

Just get a Mac with decent specs so you can use bootcamp to install Windows on it and play some of the more-modern games. It's what I did with my MacBook Pro at any rate.

(nice to see someone else taking an interest in the Animation field. If your experience it to be anything like mine, expect a *huge* amount of your free time to be consumed by drawing.....drawing......and drawing some more as you re-do an animated sequence for the third time)

I've used Macs for years and they're nice enough machines _BUT_ when it came to purchase my latest notebook/desktop I went to Dell instead. Why? OS X is great but it's not worth the cost Macs have over similarly spec'd machines. Hell I bought a Dell XPS 420 with a quad core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 1 TB HDD, blu-ray drive, NVIDIA 9800 GT, 24" Dell UltraSharp display, etc for less than the cost of a base 24" iMac. There is no Mac in this price range that compares to the performance of this machine. Also and this is a big "ALSO" you can actually update normal PCs. I wanted a GTX260, I chucked 1 in the machine. You just can't do that with an Apple machine. Hell even the upgrade path with the Mac Pro is extremely limited. So you need to weigh it up. Is the out of the box functionality of a Mac worth more to you than the out of the box functionality/expandability of any other machine? Because in the end unless you're talking about buying a Mac Pro any Windows based PC is going to be faster for the same price.

I know for a fact that that particular software bundle, CS4, will run better on 64-bit Windows computers with nVidia GPUs. There was an announcement a few months back that stated that CS4 is optimized to take advantage of nVidia GPUs to help with processing, but only on the PC version of the software.

PACs exist-they are called political action committes :D.

But, seriously, get a PC. Unless you want to do serious video and photo editing, the PC is much better. And, if you want to do ANY gaming, get the PC.

Build a "PC" known to work with OSX, best of both worlds. Sure you can get a "Mac" and dual boot too, but I don't think you can get the better gfx cards. Unless you just want a Mac for Macs sake, and not just any theoretical functionality advantage.

That's illegal as far as the Apple terms of service are concerned, and I doubt he wants to tread that territory as a student.

And only the minority run Windows in 64-bit to begin with, where-as a fair amount of OSX Leopard users are already running 64-bit. It shouldn't make much of a difference anyways.

Adobe has a lot of deals set up with college/uni campuses to get more sales out of students rather than having them all in a state where they just pirate the thing instead. I can get the same package at my college as well for 85% off the full price.

The same software suite is available for Windows...

Buy a PC, or rather buy parts and build one.

Essentially it'll be 8-12% faster for typical use, but if you have enough RAM and are working with really big photos, it'll run almost 10 times faster. It's actually not that they're using Vista/XP 64, it's that the 64-bit version of CS4 is PC-only.

Well, maybe. I read that it is "Apple labled" hardware that is required... even so, nobody is going to catch you, and nothing is going to happen. A unforceable ToS as far as im concerned. Still, most people don't want to bother with this. I think i'd be funny if MS did the same thing... I mean Apple is making money off Windows so why not... lol

There are extremely few animation software that is not avaliable on PC. And PC version of Photoshop CS4 has 64bit when Mac doesn't. Here: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/faq/?promoid=DRHXB
