Hey guys. Looking to get a GTX580 in the next couple of weeks, but I have no idea which PSU to go with, or if I should get a modular one (those are the ones where you can add and take away cables, right?). Well anyway, any suggestions will be appreciated. =)

Modular is worth it imo although less important if you have a large case with lots of room for hiding cables.

Anyway, I recommend this PSU for a high-end single video card PC. It's pretty much an irresistible deal given the $70 discount.

I was thinking something more up near the 1000W range. If it's a quality PSU it shoudl last long enough until I need to get a second 580.

modular is easier to install, but that's it.

For GTX 580 SLI I'd get something like this:

Depends on the case. If you have room to hide all the cable out of the way of airflow, then there really isn't much reason to go modular.

I got a Thermaltake Level 10 GT, but I haven't used it yet so I'm unsure how the cable management is (supposedly good).

I don't understand why people are recommending 550 to 750W supplies for a GTX 580 system w/ a possible 580 SLi in the future. Get the AX-1000 or w/e the latest 1000w is from Corsair. Just w/e you do, do NOT get a OCZ supply. Corsair may be a bit 'expensive', but don't forget about the 7 year warranty !

Hmm, the store I use only has the AX-1200, which is a bit pricier than I was hoping. The TX950 is more my price range, or the AX850...

Well, I have the corsair tx 850, and there's almost a metric ton of cables with that thing. I have all the extras stuffed into an area the size of 3 cd drives, to give you an idea of how much room you'd need.

I have this PSU, just FYI if you decide to get it, this one is semi-modular not fully modular.

One thing to consider when using a modular PSU is that you are only using the cables you need. The drawback is that when you go to upgrade you need to find the cables you didn't use in the original build. If you're meticulous about storing your PC parts, you're fine, and a modular PSU is nice due to its minimalism. If you're messy and lose things a lot, you might want to consider just using a traditional PSU.

Just some food for thought.

I wouldn't bother limiting yourself to only modular, unless the PSU has only one rail. Otherwise, you'll have to use all the cables to balance the power between multiple rails, anyway. Which makes modular more of a gimmick than an actual feature.

Get the HX-1000 or w/e the 1000w supply is in that series. Or, one of Antec's latest offerings.

The good thing about the AX series from Corsair is that they give you a bag to keep all that stuff together in. Although some generally good advice is to keep all your bits together in one box (sound advice, regardless of hobby ;) ).
