I'm going to build my own computer, and I was wondering if I should get a motherboard with an integrated sound card or not .

Do you guys think the sound card really matters enough to get my own instead of an integrated one.

If you're an average user and don't need any extra audio outputs or inputs, then I think you'll be fine with just the integrated one.

Almost all "build it yourself" motherboards come with integrated sound anyways, which even at the low end can do 5.1 surround. I personally don't recommend getting a desecrate sound card because it takes up valuable space for little to no advantage. Unless your doing Audio editing or creating a Media Center or something of that nature.

Pretty much all motherbaords come with integrated sound these days, as previsouly mentioned. These onboard chips will get you by for the initial build of your system. However, if you are a serious gamer, RealTEK cards, which are the prevalent pre-installed audio chips on most motherboards, have been recently proven to not truly render EAX effects. I typically recommend starting the build on the mobo sound card, and later upgrading to a discrete card to both offload the CPU a little, and get really great surround sound effects in gaming, particularly if it's a RealTEK card on the board. In general, I agree with the sentiments above, it's an extra, but not a requirement. Then again, good discrete cards can be had for $50 to $70, and that does not seem like much of a shave off a total system rebuild cost.
