If you are willing to spend the time overclocking and you install a good heatsink on it - then get the 8800GTX and overclock it to the same speed (or even over) of the 8800Ultra.
prolly an extra 5 - 10 frames per second its just another overclocked version of the 8800GTX save a bit more and get the 9800GTX when it comes outWhiteknight19
Yeah it's an overclocked version. If you want to spend the extra money sure, otherwise save it. I'm personally probably going to go for a 8800 Ultra single card to run at 1920x1200 res, and grab a new card if the NVIDIA 9 series comes out by the end of the year (I decided to not get SLI!)
But that's cause the Ultra costs less than the GTX on www.ncix.com (that's best Canadian site but it also sells to Americans). It costs less because of overstock. :D
First of all, what resolution will you be playing at?

Look around there. At 1920x1200 for Oblivion Outdoors, the Ultra only has a few more fps. Honestly it's not worth it, but you can get the Ultra for same price or less than GTX here, it's a special deal going on:
http://www.ncixus.com/products/24087/768-P2-N881-AR/eVGA
The Ultra is $556.50
Since you were probably going to buy off newegg, let's compare the Ultra's price to Newegg's GTX:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130072
$546.99 for GTX on Newegg, $516.99 after $30.00 Mail-In RebateSo for only $40 you can get the Ultra over the GTX. I'd do it.
You also get a FREE Lost Planet Func 1030 Mouse Pad
Also, on Newegg the Ultra (same type as the NCIX one I linked) is $60 more than the GTX. NCIX's Ultra is $40 more than Newegg's GTX.
So if you want to buy from Newegg, it'll cost $20 more than buying it from NCIX (and you get a free Func 1030 MousePad)
Us Canadians don't have choices, but you lucky Americans do.
The Ultra is an overclocked version that still consumes same amount of power, yet can stay just as "cool" as a GTX.
That's a sweet deal for the Ulta btw. Now no one can say the Ultra isn't worth it XD

Overstocked means it's cheaper than the GTX?! Wow, wish that was the case in Australia..

Yah I love NCIX. Well us Canadians can't buy from Newegg so our best place to shop at is NCIX. And luckily, they have that deal right now, so for us the Ultra is $2 cheaper than the GTX. But if you compare NCIX's US site's price of Ultra, it's only $40 more than Newegg's GTX.
!!!
I'm afraid it would overheat... as I don't have the most high quality cooling... still it gets the job done well.
I'd say NO, from what I've seen they're just overclocked version, but costs way too much more.
8800GTX is way enough for anybody, Ultra was just a final solution to counter the mysterious 2900XTX before it released, cuz Nvidia was scared that they might beat GTX, and end up didn't at all.
If you're going with an ULTRA, you might as well go for CrossFire HD 2900 XT. Well, that's according to AUS prices. :/
I personally would've go for the ULTRA, unless I have really deep pockets. I would go for something like a MSI 8800GTX, overclock the memory and just sit with that for about 2 years.
