Not with those specs... Only get vista if your building a new compmodai119

I have vista and have never had any problems with it so I am not a hater. Having said that, your system is at the bottom end of what can run vista and games won't work as well as xp for you. Furthermore there is no reason to run vista since you won't be using any directx10 grapgics with that setup. A new OS will be coming out in 2009 so maybe you can upgrade your pc then.
I just bought a new computer and the only option was Vista. From reading some of the horror stories I was expecting to experience my own nightmares re-installing some of my games and other software. I have to say, at least so far, a lot of the Anti-Vista sentiment seems to be much ado about nothing. I haven't experienced a single issue.

No they aren't that bad. Vista is incredibly annoying, and I personally hate it even though I do use it. It's very buggy, although they did make some improvements with SP1. Hopefully with a few more service packs they'll have it running as great as XP did. And like you said, eventually XP support will die, and newer games that are coming out will soon commonly be "Vista only", so if you plan on using this current PC for a gaming for a few years, Vista would be a good idea, albeit a painful one.

are you going to use 64-bit or 32-bit?
- 32-bit
-- Windows XP Pro all the way
- 64-bit
-- Does your hardware have support for Windows XP Pro 64-bit edition?
---- Yes
----- Download Windows XP Pro 64-bit edition
---- No
------ Use Vista

Vista 64bit > XP 64bit
No reason for you to get vista if you have a working OS.
1 - Your still on 2GB and want to run 32bit version.
2 - No DX10 gfx card so you won't benefit with vista at all.
You should only buy vista if your getting a new comp. Why buy a unsupported OS when theres something new?
You probably don't need it (unless you are dying to play halo 2 :) ), the next windows is coming probably 2-3 years or less.
I just got it because I built a new PC at the time and went with vista, with that said, there is nothing wrong with it, so if you want it, get it.

They are very good for a laptop, but I really don't recommend it, if you want the aero thingy with your windows, that video card isn't good for that.
If you don't need Vista, there is no reason to upgrade, to make your XP look cool:

You're really showing your maturity in calling everyone who doesn't recommend Vista a 10 yr band-wagoner. Have you even used Vista? It is widely known to have many problems, both with games and hardware.
I have the game Manhunt through steam. Never had any problem playing it on my old XP. I can't even get it to start because of the Vista Data Execution Prevention. I have even gone in and told it manually to make an exception, and it says that it is required in order to run Manhunt. Total bull****.
I also have 4 gigs of memory on my new PC and until the first service pack it would not even recognize more than 2 gigs. And I have had an insane amount of crashes and BSOD's regarding my memory and Vista, and have spent hours and hours on the phone with the Alienware tech department, and they told me out front that there are a slew of hardware related problems with Vista. The fact is it is very buggy and it will be a while before they get the kinks worked out.
Your argument is no more mature or convincing than the people you accuse of being childish band-wagoners, but if it really makes you feel better about it, by all means continue.

Well considering I've spent hours trying to fix these problems with Alienware technicians, and after running different memory tests and all sorts of other hardware tests their answer was to reinstall windows, it seems pretty obvious that Vista is just incredibly bugged down right now. You shouldn't have to be a software programmer to figure out a "user-friendly" operating system.
So stop being a smartass and try using Vista before joining the other ignorants in name-calling regarding a problem you obviously know nothing about.
There's nothing wrong with vista as long as you know how to use it.
Btw, your "alienware technians" are probably as knowlageable at those at Dell or HP. Kidiots from high school who need to make a cheap buck. About 5% of technicians i've spoken with only know what they're talking about, both in HP and Dell. I've accually called HP about sending back a laptop that had a failed motherboard and was giving me beep codes. Took me roughly half an hour to explain them to her.
I know what i'm talking about. I doubt you do, seeing as you bought a computer from alienware. Nothing's wrong with Vista now that they've patched it.

I can dig up a lot more articles like this if you think there's nothing wrong with Vista. And I'm not going to just take you're word that you know what you're talking about because you can't back it up at all. I'll believe news reports, computer companies and magazines, and personal experience over your little claims to knowledge any day.
/argument over
Windows Vista has been out for a while now and it looks fancy and all but do I really need it? Support for Windows XP will eventually dwindle and it doesn't hurt to be up to date. Still, I keep reading all this negativity on how Vista is a resource hog.
My laptop:
CPU: Intel(R) CPU T2500 @ 2.00GHz
System RAM: 2.0 GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7200
I don't do a lot of gaming on my laptop, but from what I gather, if I get Vista, my games will run worse than on XP, and that would be a pity. Additionally, I haven't actually come across any features in Vista that are essential for my computer needs. Only ones I deem as superficial.
I am also considering Ubuntu and openSUSE. :PHexagon_777
If you would like some hard evidence of Vista's problems, rather than the opinions of people who just worship anything Microsoft sh*ts out for the masses, here are some articles that may interest you:

And these are all Post-SP1 just to show you how "perfect" Vista is.
#1 reason why people bash vista saying its crap is.........
Needs expensive hardware to run smoothly, so in other words expensive to upgrade and price/preformance ratio is pretty bad.
From a personal experience I ran XP Home 32bit on a Blitz formula(P35) q6600 2gb ram 8800gtx x-fi card and a 150gb raptor. (All stock speeds, BIOs untouched) My comp wasn't stable even with SP3. Luckily I didn't buy the OS because I had XP cd lying around from my old comp.
I decided to take a dive at the 64bit version of windows but couldn't find a XP 64bit on retail so I bought vista instead along with another 2gb of ram. Now my comp is solid and stable like a rock. Absolutely NO BSODs before and post SP1. Most games run fine but the only one that had trouble was Dungeon Keeper 2 :(
I also owned a Dell Inspiron 1501 that came with a free vista upgrade. For that comp it was a nightmare, Aero takes its toll on intergrated gfx cards and low cpu speeds. I also bought my bro a Alienware m9750 with vista was installed and that comp runs fine w/o overheating etc.
You be the judge if you want to take the dive or not. For computers you shouldn't upgrade if you don't really need to... Since you have a working OS along with a geforce 7 series card I suggest you stay with XP since you won't gain anything.

Games that i can play on XP with ultra high and great resolution i strugle to run on even medium on Vista
Other than that Vista is really great, but if you dont have new good card and pc dont buy it...
