im building my own pc, i will use it mostly for gaming, and im wondering should i get vista? i was going to just take the hdd from my current pc which has xp on it, and use that, but its quite a complicated process, xp is old now, and this is a big brand new system (so it would be nice to have a new os), and the exchange rate right now from sterling to euro is excellent, and with 64 bit, i could use 4gb of ram.

BUT theres a lot of talk of how rubbish it is, now, i have only seen it on laptops, and it seems extremely slow, but so did xp on laptops, so i guess thats a bit unfair.

also, all sorts of noise with incompatibility, and the like, and a downgrade in gaming performance. i dont mind these sorts of obstacles too much, i quite enjoying getting round stuff (to a certain extent of course), but the thought of a spastic os that "alerts" you when you insert a cd- an unidentified program is trying to access your computer-is pretty upsetting.

do you guys have problems with it? and if i do get it, which version should i get?

final point, windows 7 isnt too far away, should i just hold out for that? or will it be compatible with my pc now? my mobo is p5q pro if that helps, i cant imagine any of the other hardware would have an effect on it.

cheers

my 2 cents. i use vista and have NO problems whatsoever with it. that being said windows 7 is coming out soon and you can get the beta for free i believe. I recommend either trying win 7 beta or continuing to use XP. i dont think that theres any games that are supported as "vista only" since vista will be dropped not long after win 7 comes out im assuming, i would just recommend staying old school xp (which will support whatever programs you want and you already have it) or using win 7 when it arrives (which will be supposedly quite a bit better than vista)

Shadowrun and Halo 2, I believe are the only two PC games that were strictly made for Vista DX10 only - though, I think there are some hacks out there that did the leg work to allow you to play them on XP in DX9. Not like I cared to play either of those games, so I'm just going off memory here.

I've read that XP will be supported by Microsoft up through 2014 and that Windows 7 is being built for release in 2010 sometime (if I'm recalling correctly). If you're not having any issues with your current XP, just stick with it. If you feel you absolutely must upgrade to a 64bit OS, see about getting XP's 64bit or just take the plung into Vista.

Maybe you just need to try out Windows 7 beta (partition your HDD, if you have the room and install Windows in your partitioned section) or Vista for yourself and see how you like things.

unless you really need to upgrade, stick with xp for a bit. That being said, I have vista, and it works fine, I have not heard good things about 64 bit xp

Normally i would say vista is worth it, but with windows7 release just around the corner may be best just to wait till that comes out. I do suggest you download the windows7 beta and use that for the next 6 months then from there decide which one to use.

vista is 100 bucks oem atm! alternatively i could go for xp for about 70 and hang on til windows 7.

does anyone know how to just use the os that is installed on my hdd? i dont have the disc cos its a prebuilt. surely there must be a way of doing this without purchasing more stuff?

just stick it in and call microsoft, give them the code on the stcker on the pre-built. They will give you a code to unlock the os to use in the new computer

Go for XP if you're using your pc primarily for gaming - Frame rates are still 5-10% better than under Vista and DX10 just isn't worth that loss for me. Having said that, I'm running Vista 64 as a secondary OS, and it's more stable than anything else I've come across.

I can feel the difference running the two side by side, I wouldn't be using xp if this weren't the case.

well if you put vista on dx9 mode so its the same as xp.. it should be the same.. or you might just have old hardware or low amount of ram that cant handle the extra vista load.. i mean if u got 2 gigs of ram then yeah vista probly will run slower.. but with 4 gigs of ram.. a good dual core/ quad with a good GPU i doubt vista should lag behind.

Heh my word of advice is to wait until Windows 7 comes out. It's going to be the latest and greatest. I say not to get Vista because you will get a few errors (as I did when I first got it pre-installed).

I miss my XP :(
