I hear they both have their ups and downs, so I don't know which one to get. Also, are there a lot of other players in Guild Wars? Because I enjoy chatting, guilds and stuff.

I haven't played them but I know for a fact that both have a lot of players. The behemoth WoW has more but GW2 has a large amount as well and it ends up being more related to the number of players in the server anyway. I would personally choose GW2, since I refuse to pay a monthly subscription to play a game but you may not care about that and I can't really talk about their quality.

WoW just had a new expansion, which I havent played. I hated Cataclysm though and I hate hte absurdly large numbers present in WoW atm (160k hp on a level 86).

Guild Wars 2 is fun, but doesnt provide much of a dungeon/raiding experience.

Guild Wars 2 since you enjoy the social side, plus you don't pay monthly and they're adding new content soon or at least it's in development already. WoW if you enjoy raiding and dungeons and getting drawn into a game that uses the holy trinity but the two are completely different in game style. Try the WoW free trial see how you like it, if you don't then obviously GW2 is your best bet.

Definitely Guildwars 2. Best MMO i've played in years, they managed to take the grindy feel out of this MMO's and that's easily the best thing that's happened to this genre in a long time.

You're telling me, all those huge numbers made dungeon/raid healing extremely hard.

It's really Do you like loot and having the best gear with large numbers on it? Do you like doing the same thing over and over (grinding) just to get this good gear? If yes to both then WoW. If you would rather explore a huge, living, breathing world, where quests are voice acted and interesting and let you approach them in different ways. As in, you go to this guy, and he tells you a little story about these special animals or something, you aren't told to kill all the other animals harming them, you aren't told to protect or save the special animals, instead you can do a variety of things, if killing isn't your thing, no problem, just disable some animals traps around the place and that will fill up your questing bar thing. The only time you are forced into doing something is in YOUR story, which you don't have to even complete, if you want to explore the whole world doing dynamic quests and levelling that way, doing no story at all, you can. In fact, if you want to make a character and then jump straight into PvP and level that way, you can. I mentioned dynamic quests before, these are, as the name suggests, dynamic. If you are passing through a village and it's being attacked, you'll get a quest to save the town, if you do, bam you get a reward, if you don't. You might come back in an hours time to find it's now owned by the attackers and you can't go near it or you'll be killed. Or maybe it's just a plague hit a city of people, so you have to go find some plants to make medicine. But you don't HAVE to do it, it's your choice. That sounds like a grind, killing things and retrieving medicines etc. But 1. Because they are dynamic and it's your choice to partake in them, it never feels grindy and 2. Because the world is so lively and fresh you WANT to help the people/save the animals/do whatever, because you feel part of the world and thus it doesn't seem grindy because it's less "go here do this for a reward", and more "do this for the fun of it and for the people/animals/whatever oh and you get a side reward!" I think thats a major difference between WoW and GW2, in WoW everyone wants the best gear and highest level, so they grind quests to get there. In GW2, its more about the experience, its less about the rewards and loot and more about the world, the story, and taking part in a journey, where at the end you'll be level 80.

I would say both are great MMOs and I have both and play both, GW2 has some of the best gameplay mechanics in MMOs and I love all the variation between diffrent classes and skills, but then again it's missing some things I loved about WOW, simple stuff like Mounts, I love mounts and I love to collect them, also I feel character Gear and weapons in WOW is more flashy if you might say and thats another thing I really like about WOW. in the end both are great games and both are awsome, why not grab both ( not at the same time ) and play them and see whichone you like more, I play both cuz I only pay one subscription and thats for WOW since GW2 has no sub.

I would recommend WoW because it beats GW2 in every aspect expet graphics. GW2 is very bland, combat system is horrible, pvp sucks. Story is bad, quests are boring: collect stuff, feed cows, kill crap, etc... At the end game there is only grind as in all other mmos. There is a reason why it's f2p, the game is just not good enough to be p2p. As for WoW it's still ok, I just wish Blizz haven't made the game that easy for lazy and stupid people who just want everything without putting any effort.

I am going to recommend WoW from the hook factor. I played GW2 for 2-3 weeks and got bored. I played WoW for 2-3 years before getting bored. Haven't played it in almost a year now, but I am going to pick up MoP in a month or so. Just to get the SURGE of new-comers and people returning out of the way before playing. Someone above mentioned the free trial, and I'd 100% recommend that. No harm in downloading it, playing up to level 20, and if you hate it then check out GW2. With that said though GW2 to me is inferior to WoW in all perspectives except for graphics.

Don't get suckerd into MMO'S, they're not worth the time investment. GW2 I haven't played but it looks like more of anonchalant MMO which you can play at your own pace..

Played around 50h with my gf (hell we couldn't even play together because of the stupid server overflow system). The first 30 minutes actually were the most fun, with time it became obvious that is one of the worst mmos we have ever played. We both got a refund, some of my friends did the same.

I guess you and your GF completely missed the point of GW2. But that's fine, most WoW players did.

Hahahahahaha, way to describe WoW. Honestly, all the quests are voice acted, the story is fine, the quests allow you to choose how you approach them. You aren't told to kill 10 beats (aka WoW) you're just told that the beasts are annoying and you have the freedom to choose how to deal with them. Do you set traps, kill them, lure them away from the area, scare them etc. It's not just a one way street. WoW is the definition of grind. The reason people play for years on end isn't because there's that much content, it's because they redo the content there is to get better gear aka, grinding.

Every MMO has grind, but imo GW2 hides it a lot better than others.

And what I like about GW2 is that killing things isn't the only quest you get. You get XP for exploration, vistas, social things, discoveries, problem solving, helping people out etc....

What I love most about GW2 is that you don't feel compelled to play for hours and hours to achieve something. Even if you play for an hour a day, chances are you will come across a big event with a big boss and lots of players participating.

Apparently there are other things you can do on this site to get levels on your account. A while back I saw a level 30 something with like 17 posts. And I'm not sure if account age has much to do with it. My account's been here since 2004.

It´s not free to play actually. It´s p2p but without subscription. GW franschise is famous because of this model, it never had subscription in the first place. NEVER. And by some reason it managed to perdure in the history releasing two expansions. And by the AAA quality of GW2 I can´t say that the developer was starving.

actually, GW1 had 3 expansions, two of which didn't require the original campaign to be played, and the third just required one of the 3 standalone campaigns. the GW1 games sold over 7 million copies, so yeah, they were pretty successful.

I would say Guild Wars 2 hands down. I payed WOW myself for around 2 years, had a couple of 85's, did some raiding and such. But as my life got more and more busy I have found there is no way I can raid regularly and keep up with everyone else. I honestly don't get how anyone has the time to play that, I just don't.

Guild Wars 2 is far more enjoyable because it has amazing moment to moment gameplay where you can do cool things and accomplish something in 30 mins, while WOW doesnt get fun until you've bored yourself to death leveling.

WOW is better if you have more time and enjoy more traditional mmo's.

GW2 is better if you have less time and are bored with traditional mmo's.

It seems most WOW fans hate guild wars 2 just because its not WOW....try and open your mind up to something different.

I've noticed it depends on the race. People say the Human Story is mediocre....but I'm doing the Asura Story and it's great so far.

If you want a fun mindless leveling experiance with alot of nice flash, and a very smooth experiance, Guild Wars 2. If you want mass pvp and decent 8 vs 8 pvp that has no gear advantages go Guild Wars 2. If you like PvE that will last you months, have good mechanics, and have clever boss/enemy encounters and lots of interesting fun rewards, play World of Warcraft. BUT. if you want the "sum of its parts" World of Warcraft, Guild Wars PvP is good, but the difference between WoW's Long Term PvE and Guild Wars is a MUCH bigger gap. Honestly, once you hit level cap (which doesn't take long at all) you are pretty much done unless you want just achievements, and the dungeons just lack creatitivity, control or anything. Don't be fooled, removing the "holy trinity" hasn't created anything REALLY great, its simply made chaos for the sake of chaos, in no way does it present more challenge or skill like some will have you believe... and the fights are pretty much just as predictable (in alot of cases even more predictable as 99% of the group-enounters have no creativity to them.)

GW2 removes a lot of the padding mechanics, since it doesn't have fees that rely on people staying for as long as possible. of course WoW will last longer, but will it be fun as you do it? and GW2 has A LOT of content. sure if you play 24/7 you could finish all of PvE in some weeks, but do the math and see how much time you've actually spent achieving that, and think how people normally play games. to a normal person, GW2 can last months. and i'm saying that assuming no new content is released, no PvP or WvW is played, and no alts are made.

Don't be fooled, removing the "holy trinity" hasn't created anything REALLY great, its simply made chaos for the sake of chaos, in no way does it present more challenge or skill like some will have you believe... and the fights are pretty much just as predictable (in alot of cases even more predictable as 99% of the group-enounters have no creativity to them.)MBirdy88

Guild Wars 2's system is far from perfect, but it is still leagues above the role system gone wrong known as the holy trinity. And the herpa derpa mobs it causes.

Holy Trinity was the worst thing that happened the RPG genre.

As for the lack of interesting boss mechanics, that has nothing to do with the lack of a trinity and more to do with poor enemy design.

I've played the trial version of WOW and didn't like it, but I haven't tried out GW2 yet. Right now I don't have any money to spend on it and I'll probably wait until they have a trial version or lower the price.

One of the biggest draws for GW2 for me is the gear progression actually means something. People talk about how WoW has more content and progression, but I'd argue WoW has zero progression because the word itself implies there is an end. Every six months there is a gear reset and you start all over again. Also, for those that aren't apart of the top raiding guilds, you are always incomplete. Even if you are in a guild that can roll heroic content, you may never finish your heroic set. The last tier that I played WoW, I was missing three pieces of heroic gear and it drove me crazy.

I genuinely like the idea I can get a full set of exotic gear for X character and actually move on to an alt. I spend so much time and focus in WoW I always only ever had one character per expansion that I worked on. I can even quit my thief now in GW2 and come back in 6 months and the gear will still be there and just as good as it was before(granted not cool looking).

The feeling of completion is nice and you can accomplish that in a reasonable amount of time.

But hasn't the Holy Trinity been in RPGs for years? I remember even playing Baldurs Gate, there was a tank, then area of effect mages, a healer etc etc...???

just because it's bad doesn't mean it won't stick around. the gaming industry is full of mechanics that fit that description.

It depends what you are trying to get out of GW2. If you play it thinking it has Raids and Gear like WoW, then no....you won't enjoy it. If you play it for vistas, story, characters, events etc....you will love it.
