So you can spend $20 on something you know you will like or spend $50 on a chance.
In the end it's up to you.
He's still taking a chance either way (Not really with WAR, as it has its roots in DaoC, which is an excellent base for an MMO). What if he doesn't have enough time to dedicate to raids and to repeat the gear gather (T4 -> T5 -> T6)? What if he can't find a raiding guild?
Well, some people are saying that WAR removes a lot of the tedium that is present in WoW...and WoW had already done a lot to remove a lot of the tedium that was up to that point common in the genre, believe it or not.
I would suggest WAR at this point because there will be a lot more new players playing it and I hear the low level areas of WoW are rather deserted these days...and that isn't very fun. If you get into WoW now, you are probably just going to feel like your only objective is to get to the level cap where everyone else is. You probably will have a much harder time doing lower level group content (which you don't have to do of course) than you would have back in its earlier days.
I'm awaiting a Free Trial, whenever that happens.
WAR looks like a lot of fun. A game you can pick up and play for a few and put down without abandoning any committments. The PVP aspect looks fun. I was watching a Dwarf (tank/warrior) beat the snot out of three destruction players, by himself. It looked so fun, I almost bought the game that night. Still, I gotta try it for myself before I put down $40-50 + subscription fee.
Try WOW first if u r bored , freeze your account for a while and get WAR.
Then u will see the difference and u can continue playing WOW or WAR.
U can always cancel your monthly payment like i did 4 WOW for 3 months.
I just started to play it again, it feels refreshed now for me.
I wanna try WAR too but hopefully they come up with a trial .
Floating casters and messed up toons in Warhammer with head/body proportion all wrong is what turned me off ... also the hunter class and the way they shoot arrows is really dumb looking .... bottom line is Blizzard has made a great game and have an expansion coming out that has some of what Warhammer will have and also it will have what is good about what Blizz has already done .... 10,000,000 subscribers can't be wrong ....
I played Warhammer Online for one day through Fileplanet beta and it stunk ...
heck uhmm if people want true pvp then play on some of the fake WOW servers with all pvp realm where u get coin reward for kills and such ... don't throw $ at the 2nd rate mmorpg ... Blizz is still king

Right, let's take adivce from someone who has played the game for 1 day....obviously you haven't played the game if all you have to say is the graphics are bad and an animation on a hunter class looks dumb. In all honesty, the game rock when it comes to pvp. If you want to play 100v100 pvp battles in which you have to defend your territory against other clans/guilds/warbands then warhammer is the choiice to go. If not, then go with warcraft.

The low level areas for some areas aren't that deserted. It's just you will find some races more common than others (e.g. human, orc/troll). Also, getting groups for low level content is difficult unless you are looking for a dungeon group. Most of the time, you won't need a group for leveling up, most quests are soloable, so you shouldn't have any trouble leveling (it's just really long after level 30).
The level cap part I definately agree with, you need 1 month worth of playing (disincluding offline time) to reach level 70; and even longer when the new expansion comes out. However, like above, I would suggest giving WAR a try (don't knock it before you try it).
