I already can't run a steady 60FPS at 1080P in many games despite having an Evga GTX980Ti sc+. I didn't overclock it but I didn't think it was necessary.

Example of some games that I can't run 60FPS

- GTA 5 (the FPS is often in the 40s range, but I do have a graphic enhancer on, and everything it's on max settings)

- Rise of the Tomb Raider (50s) max with FXAA

- All Total War games. This is probably because of my CPU

So I wonder if going 1440P will drastically reduce the FPS in these games. In that case is it worth it? I don't really want to reduce image quality since I think I would value it more than resolution.

Thanks!

Yes, 1440p will reduce the FPS in most of your games by quite a bit. However, with a 980ti that shouldn't too big of a problem. With a 970 I still play most games on very-high at 1440p. I can't max out some games like GTA V and TW3 but they're pretty close. One benefit about 1440p is you don't need high anti-aliasing which definitely saves you some FPS in games.

I didn't no to upgrade but do now. I am waiting for at least another year to see where these VR will go. Also waiting for the 1000 GTX card from NVidia. I don't think a 970 to a 980ti all that big of difference in long term.

1440p is sweet!
For the fps is heavy games, G-sync takes care of everything, but when it is light on the gpu, getting over 90fps is just pure awesome!!!!

your cpu or ram must be holding you back....i also have a 980ti and i get 65 fps on rise of tomb raider...everything maxed...vsync off..AA set SSAAx2...pure hair set to on(not the highest)...

im using 16gb of ddr4 and i7 skylake cpu.

----------------

to answer your question...

should you got from 1080p 50fps to 1440p 30fps?

umm...it would be a better choice for some games....1440p completely changes some games for the better..and better than playing at 1080/60 imo..

try it out.

1440P is worth it, but only if you get a good monitor and keep on top of GPU upgrades. IMO 1440P is a premium gaming experience. It's by no means essential, but nice to have. But it's also up there in the realm of diminished returns. It costs a lot more money to maintain a rig to play games at ultra settings, 1440P than it does to maintain a rig to play games at 1080P. And all 1440P is a boost in sharpness. It's not magic and it's not life-changing. I wouldn't feel bad if I couldn't have it, and I don't feel like I'm getting a unique experience just because I do have it.

The reason I went for 1440p is because I knew that I wouldn't be able to run a lot of new games at 60fps with ultra settings on a 4k monitor. I thought it would be better to get a high end 1440p monitor with lots of features. It is good, especially when having G-sync as well. G-sync helps compensate when there a certain games you cannot run completely smoothly. However, like other people have said, you may need to upgrade more frequently as the FPS dips fairly quickly with each tier of graphical settings on a game at 1440p. In terms of visuals, it is very nice and worth getting.

With 1440p you will usually find there is some new games you can run with high settings, and others that aren't even at a playable framerate.

Yes, presuming your 1440p is the same size, or very close, compared to the 1080p screen.

With your card, you should go for it.

I have a gtx 980 with a 1440p monitor and I can almost max everything, I jus turn down the AA.

I don't always get 60 fps, but that doesn't bother me.

Glad to hear that my gut instinct was correct. I'm not really missing out on much by sticking with 1080p - and saving alot of money! That said, come ps5, games will probably start getting much more demanding and I'll be forced to upgrade. But that won't be for a while.

No I would not recommend you buy a 2560x1600 Monitor resolution is not the most important thing for good image quality or even the second most important hell not even third although it does make a difference but not before things like static contrast ratios and black levels. If you listen to my advice you will get a much bigger jump in image quality of your display and in turn how nice games look on said display. For now I would say stick to 1080p and forgot about monitors get a LCD T.V with low input lag that has a good static contrast ratio and relatively deep blacks. Ideally you want one that is close to 5000:1 if not higher but I don't think you will find it without buying an OLED TV. Compare that to the 1000:1 contrast ratio at best in the majority of pc monitors using IPS Panels this 2016 no one should hold there pc back with a measly 1000:1 contrast ratio display.

http://www.rtings.com/

The site above is basically the best site for TV Reviews there actually review T.Vs and give you the information that actuality matters when determine which television to buy for gaming on Console or PC. I personally just bought a Sony KDL50W800B to upgrade from my 32" Panasonic I have been using as a monitor for the last 5 years. I finally got tired of being reminded of how my pc games should look on a truly high quality each time I decided to lay down on my bed and play on my Sony Trinitron(HD CRT) Yeah its a CRT and its big and fucking heavy as shit but god damn its one of the highest quality tv I've had the pleasure of personally viewing in person really opened my eyes to what really matters for image quality contrast ratio and black levels and it only me $20 probably the best $20 I have ever spent on anything and possibly will ever spend!

http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/w800b

The 50" sony I bought won't beat it out in those areas I would need an OLED for that but that's for later I intend to have a 4K OLED Before this decade is over! But I know it will come a hell of a lot closer to the Trinitron then my current Panasonic can muster and by extension pretty every pc monitor as well since almost all of them are IPS Panels with 1000:1 contrast ratio at best that hasn't changed in so many years its like no one appreciates actual high quality displays I just can't make sense of if it but whatever as long as low input lag T.V get made I don't have to be limited to monitors the move away from crt to lcd was overall not beneficial at all for image quality but when they finally get around to selling oled monitors then we can have complete upgrade to crt in pretty much every way. Altough personally I think I will stick to TVs regardless I like gaming with at a desk with a mouse and keyboard with a Large Screen TV a few feet away from me its quite immersive!

@KHAndAnime: I am thinking about going to 1440p but I like to hold out to at least 3+ years on the GPU side of things. For example I held onto my HD 6970 for 4 years and 10 months. I first ran into issues not maxing out first in Crysis 3. Then in 2015 when and more and more games came out I it started to lag the tipping point being Battlefront. So it had a good 4 and a half year run.

So how often would I need to upgrade if I want to play games maxes out at 1440p? I could leave with FXAA or not much AA. How often did you upgrade?

@thereal25: This is kind of what I am feeling. I played around 1440p using AMD's VSR feature where it lets you run games at higher resolution and it fits it in your current monitor. If I am honest I didn't see much of a difference with maybe a slight rise in image quality sharpness. Granted it is not a 1440p monitor. Now when Tested going to 4K the difference was definitely noticeable.

Really hard to make any sort of generalizations about upgrades. If you're trying to consistently play the newest games released at 60+ FPS 1440P, IMO you'll be upgrading every single year. Or at least that's what I imagine myself doing to keep that goal. If you don't care about games that specifically push the graphical envelope or having 60+ FPS, you could probably get away with every 2-3 years.

That's why I was hesitant to make the leap to 1440P. I wasn't sure if I wanted to constantly upgrade my PC. But the more I do it, the more fun I have. So now I'm maintaining 2 gaming PC's. One will be targeting 1440P and the other 1080P (until I get a 4k TV). It's expensive to get started but once you've already got the top parts, it's pretty easy to sell parts as the newest ones that come out and pay a couple hundred for the upgrade.

Helps a lot that there are barely any new games coming out that I find worth purchasing anymore. So all that money ends up going to the ol' PC instead ;)
