I have windows 7 32bit right now but I think maybe I should have bought the 64bit version. Reason being that I have a 64bit processor (Amd 9850 phenom quad core). What advantages would I get if using 64bit? Oh, I also have 4gb ram my comp currently uses only 3gb which is because I'm running 32bit I think...

You pretty much nailed it - 32 bit can only use 3-4GBs of RAM, so if you want to get the most of your system (and potentially upgrade the RAM in future) 64 bit is what you need.

Will my processor work any better if I have 64bit?

No, but in theory your RAM access should be faster with bigger files.

For programs designed to make use of 64 bit instructions, yes. But the main advantage is the ability to address much larger amounts of RAM, which power users (gamers, video editors) tend to like.

If you bought the Retail Version you get a 32-bit disc and 64-bit disc. I'm thinking you bought an OEM 32-bit DVD?

buying a 32bit os is one of the most stupid thing you can do. Everything that works on 7 32 works on 7 64 but 64 bit supports more ram than your mob can support while 3.3gb on 32bit is rather limiting. 64 bit gives you more memory support and support of 64bit apps that run faster and can use more than 4gb ram (very useful when doing demanding stuff)

Gah.

You witch posts in so many threads should not say 3,3GB when the 32Bit will handle no less than 4GB.

If you have a graphics with 4GB memory you would end up with 0GB Random Acsess Memory.

If you have an intergrated graphic solution that share memory with the Ram you can and will see most of the whole 4GB the 32Bit can see!

TC hasn't specifyed what gfx he got, if he even got one, he could have a 2GB one and that would make him see much less than the 3,3GB you reffer to.

;)

Not directed to only you imprezawrx500 but also to many other that have written in this thread:

Please people stop this GB guesses under 32Bit OS, because that is what you do.

It's more than a given number, it will vary from PC to PC because of how it's configurated.

TC: To be sure you have to do an estemate, what components do you have in your PC?

If you got a 512Mb graphics card you can roughly withdraw that from the total 4GB memory the OS support, your system will still use the whole 4GB memory the OS support but not 4GB Ram you have fitted. (YES, the memory on the gfx is also being baked into the 4GB your OS support!)

A 2GB gfx would make you see less than 2GB, and this is the guideline not the norm!

The diffrence betw 3GB or 4GB ram isn't that diffrent, i dont know the size of the Videomemory on your gfx but usally it's 1GB or 512mb, many people still have cards 256mb, it all depends on how much memory you need to withdraw from the 4GB you OS WILL use.
