Ok folks, ive been using XP for about 8 years now, and im stuck with it, i cant move on:?

i tried Vista for one day, and i was screaming, i switched to XP right away. In Vista, i couldnt find any driver for my ADSL Modem, its really old and i dont have the money to get a new one, is there a work around for this?

I use my PC for everything: gaming, programming, surfing, video and other stuff. my specs:

Intel Core2Duo E7400@2.8Ghz

Nvidia GTS250 1Gb.

2Gb of DDR2 RAM @ 800Mhz.

My main concern is the RAM too. Its really expensive here and i dont have the money right now to upgrade. What do you think?

Win7 would run better than Vista with less ram, but i'd still want 4GB really. I think you're fine with XP really.

If you have driver woes with Vista I don't see how they will be any less woeful in W-7. For my Linksys wireless adapter I had to go to the chipset manufacturer to get a working driver. You should try that route before you upgrade. 2GB of RAM will be the minimum you need for W-7.

I'm using Win7 64-bit with 'only' 2 gigs of RAM, and it's STILL faster then XP was. I have yet to feel like I need more RAM then that. And I'm sure drivers will be less of an issue as well with Windows 7.

Really? I have a linksys wireless card to, and Win7 set it up and had it working automatically from the start. Didn't need to install any drivers.

Hmm... That's strange. I upgraded from XP 32 to Windows 7 64 and noticed a decrease in FPS in some of my games so far. Should I be expecting better results with a 4870 1G, 4Gs of DDR2, and E8400 @ 3ghz?

Consider yourself lucky. I just tried to help my uncle get his desktop on his network with 3 different USB adapters from linksys, none had a driver provided by linksys.

I was short on time, and was unable to try anything else, but tomorrow I will be trying to use the chipset drivers for it like someone else mentioned.

Is your OS 64 or 32 bit, the 32 bit is easy to get stuff working with it compared to 64.

Vista and 7 use the same driver base, so your modem won't work. Also it does use more ram than XP, though it is still a great OS. However I find it pretty much identical to Vista. I have no idea why you don't like Vista, but w/e.

2 gigs is fine for xp. There have been some benchmarks that show only slight decrease in game performance between 2 and 4 gigs.

I don't see why games should be performing worse on your comp. Bad display drivers maybe?

Yeah, Windows 7 does use more RAM (650-700MB for 7 vs 250-300MB for XP at startup). I did a little stress testing a couple days ago, and got the RAM usage with just desktop activity up to 1.7GB (of my 2GB) and still it performed like nothing was going on, while XP lagged quite a bit. Also, I hear since Vista SP2, Vista is pretty awesome now too.

no point unless you want 4gb or more of ram. xp works just fine. sure w7 is nicer than xp but it doesn't really add anything much that xp doesn't have for general use.
