I'm going to 11th grade, college is just 2 years away, where I won't be using big LCD HDTVs there. As of now, TV broadcasts won't be in 1080p for a while, and only HD format DVDs are in 1080p and some games on 360 and PS3. 1080p is only noticeable if the TV is 50" or higher, and if you're closer to it. I did like these deals here, it's 1080p and it's cheaper(not $2000 like most of them are). I could go for 720p and it'd be under $1000, something my parents would much rather buy. At 42" and say about 8-10 feet away, is 1080p worth it? I can just use the TV for 2 years before it's off to college, and I don't know if 1080p will become popular within these 2 years. So should I just get a 720p TV, or 1080p is good if it's that cheap?

At 8-10 feet away, there is not a big noticable difference between 720p and 1080p. I say buy the 720p TV and with the money you saved, spend it on a surround sound setup. Audio is just as important as video in my opinion.

true! within that distance and that size hdtv, its not worth it. also, to fully appreciate the 1080p, i hear a 60" will provide the best results (sorry, no linkage for proof of my argument). and even then you'd need to be further away to enjoy it. as for me, i'm fine watching and gaming on my 43" plasma at 720p

to the plasma users:
hows the graphics (color, brightness & text) compared to LCD displays and have you experienced any burn in issues??

- i'm having a hard time deciding on a 42" 1080P LCD & 42" Plasma 720P:
Samsung 42" 720p Plasma (15000:1) = $1299
*Pioneer 42" 720p Plasma (last year model) 1000:1 = $1399
Philips 42" 1080p LCD (8000:1) = $1799
Sony Bravia 40" 1080p LCD = $1699
Toshiba 42" 1080p LCD = $1599

the Samsung seems to be the best deal for the money (but it's not 1080p and i'm concerned about the Plasma "burn in" reputation)...i play games ALOT !!!

decisions, decisions...help

thanks

The only type of burn in I get is if I'm playing a game for a really long time when i shut off the tv if i look really close i can still see the last screen displayed. but it goes away after I turn the TV back on and display something else. if i stop playing a game and goto TV after, then shut it off,I get no ghost. so the answer is no i don't get any permanent burn in. also note that another big difference I noticed between the LCD and the plasma is if your doing alot of daytime viewing the plasma doesn't get washed out by the sunlight the way the LCD does. but both are very close at night time viewing. I've had my Plasma for just short of a year now and I am glad i got it. just wish i got a bigger one. Pioneer seems to be the leader in the plasma tv field so they are a sure bet for a good product but you will pay extra for it. I am a pioneer fan so if i had the extra cash to blow i would def go that way. would go nice with my pioneer 1016 THX reciever. but the cash flow just isn't there.

as for the 1080 vs 720 i did notice a difference, but thats just my opinion. some say you can't until you get to 50" size or bigger. I notice it in the 40" range.

thanks for the reply...i heard the same, Pioneer is pretty much tops for Plasma.
i'm considering the above mentioned pioneer plasma simply because IT'S A PIONEER at that price, but the 15000:1 contrast on the samsung and $100 less than the 10000:1 contrast on the pioneer (last year model but new)still has me scratching my head :?

i'm liking the text & sharpness on the LCD's but the color & detail on the Plasma's is making it hard for me to decide?
anyways...back to the stores i go! (i'm becoming a regular)

thanks again!
