Should I upgrade from 2500k to 6700k?

Hey Guys..

I currently have an i5 2500k at 5ghz and I'm wondering if changing to a 6700k would increase performance in games. Judging by a few benchmark comparisons the stock 2500k is about 20% slower (rough estimate) than the 6700k.

I'm just thinking has my overclock narrowed this gap enough for me not to bother changing cpu or would it be worth it?

You should ask yourself why didn't you upgrade to 4690K already? :P

My point if you didn't concider upgrading into 4690K you shouldn't look at 6700K since the difference between the previous CPU isn't upgrade at all unless you aim for lower temps.

No, I wouldn't bother. Save your money as you aren't going to be improving game performance by anything noticeable. If it's for heavy processing work outside of games then an upgrade could be worthwhile but look at doing an X99 build instead.

Whoa why do you need to upgrade? I have the same exact processor at that OC and it rocks everything I throw at it.

My temps are pretty good they never go above 60c at 5ghz and my room is rather warm.

I guess there's no point upgrading.. you guys saved me from impulse buying something that would have been a waste of money lol. Thanks for that :P

I am planning to sli two 980 ti's so I hope it won't bottleneck me in the future :)

Unless there's a huge leap keep that CPU till it dies.

Yeah its unfortunate but nothing in the foreseeable future is going to bottleneck that CPU. With DirectX 12 its making even older CPUs last longer by directing more calls to the GPU. Looks like the ole LGA 1155 is here to stay a few years longer.

Not sure how that is unfortunate.. It means you can continue using a cpu released back in early 2011 and not be forced to spend upwards to $400+ for the new cpu, motherboard and memory.. I5 2500k and 2600k are the biggest bang for your buck cpu's ever made for sure..

You have a sandybridge i5 2500K clocked at 5GHz.

There is no game that a 2500K@5GHz will bottleneck it.

At 5GHz you can keep it a while longer. To be honest I think only real upgrade for you is going to X99 or wait for Skylake-E.

No way is it that much slower.. .. A i5 2500k at 4.4 to 4.5ghz out does a stock speed I5 4690k.. Even when the 4690k is overclocked, we are talking about a tops of 5% difference in performance in real world game tests at best.. Add into the fact that the Skylake so far have been looking to be awful overclockers from what I have seen people have only been able to push their chips to around 400 or 500mhz tops..

The best thing about Skylake is the lower frame times.

If you play a lot of games and have been noticing stuttering or hitching... Skylake is the way to go.

@SPBoss: You know the best way to answer your question? When the day comes and your computer is chugging along when you want to do something on it then that's when you should upgrade. If you don't currently have that problem with your games or applications then you have no need for an upgrade.

Consider upgrades when you find the need for it because you're not getting the performance you desire from what you need your PC to do.

I have a 2500k and it works great. Save your money my man the 2500k is still killing games now.

@Truth_Hurts_U: Good call on the frame-times. Frame-times are crucial to a good experience. You can have high fps, but if the frame-times are inconsistent, it will feel like shit. I may upgrade to Skylake-E because of this. I will see how DX12 factors into all of this when the games start rolling out.

Yeah, mine is still running strong in my rig too. I was just about to pull the trigger and move to SkyLake, but after everyone's opinions that I should wait...I'm glad I did. I'm going to give DX12 some time to develop and see how much it extends the life of my 2500k. I'm running games just fine atm and I think once I got over the feeling of wanting to upgrade because SkyLake was so new...holding out for another generation (SkyLake-E or even Cannonlake) is going to be worth it in the long run.

@sSubZerOo: I think the Q6600 certainly gives the 2500k a run for its money in terms of being the best bang for buck CPU of all time.
