I built my PC a long time ago (5-6 years), would a new graphics card (gtx 460 1 gb) help it run games better in 1680x1050? Or should I just start over with a new PC?

New games are lagging a lot in 1680x1050 at the moment (assassins creed 2, just cause 2).

current specs:

- AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ (2 CPUs), ~2.5GHz

- 3582MB RAM memory

- 500 GB hard drive

- NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT

- Windows 7 pro 32 bit

dont suppose you know what motherboard you have?

it could mean the difference between a small upgrade or a complete overhaul.. also your playing at 1680 x 1200 my hd 5830 is far more qualified than that.. abomination of a gpu.

Tuff to say. You have a lot of reusable parts there depending on your MOBO

It would be best to start over I'm afraid. You can definitely keep the RAM, the Hard Drive, and Windows of course. It sounds like you also have a decent monitor, so you could easily build a new Phenom X4 computer for around 500-600 that would run pretty much everything close to maxed.

With that motherboard its time to start over. If you live in the united states see if you have a microcenter near you since they have cheap processor/motherboard combo right now http://www.microcenter.com/specials/promotions/AMDbundlePROMO.htmlThe MSI board will allow you to keep your ddr2 ram which is nice and won't break the bank

I got 8gigs of extreme gamer ram ddr3 for 90.00 I would upgrade from ddr2 if you could, if you are going to upgrade you should spend alittle more so your parts will last a few more years till the next upgrade. I got a MB that supports CF sli, and I dont plan on doing that any time soon but it was only 50.00 more, and I will use it one day. Prepare if you can

You have an older dual core, so you're looking at having to start over I'm afraid.

I have a very similar setup as you. (I have a 5000+ 2.6ghz and a Radeon 5770). Assuming you have DDR2 Ram, a new video card would help tremendously. I run JC2, DA2, other newer games just fine at 1600x900 resolution with settings on high. Getting around 40-50FPS. It's been my workhorse and has performed great this past year, but I think this year will be the year I will have to upgrade with all the new games coming out and whatnot. So you could either upgrade the video card, and you should b able to run new games med-high with decent fps at that resolution, but keep in mind that this route will only delay the inevitable. You will definitely need a new Mobo and cpu if you wish to run all the new pc games coming out later this year.

If you really want to stick to AMD, I would suggest waiting for Bulldozer (AMD's newest CPU's) to come out in June or get an AMD hex-core. I would seriously consider Intel's sandy bridge as its currently the fastest platform for gaming on the market right now. I've been running the i5-2500k with a Gigabyte P67-UD4 since launch and its awesome. Dont worry about all that recall crap.

For gaming?????/ We barley need 4 at this point. That is a waste, by the time you actually need one it will be cheap!

Depends on how much money you want to spend. I have an i3 530 @ 2.93 ghz and a hd 5770 . I can run almost everything on max on 1280x1024 since i only game on a 4:3 screen this is like 1080p on a widecreen. However my cpu won't even bottleneck a hd 6950. Allthough i would rather have a had quad core for the future , games aren't really optimized to use 4 cores most of them (more than 95 procent) only use two cores. So all depends on how much money you want to spend. The ideal setup is an i5-760 or even i5-2500 with a hd 6950 . An i3 with a hd 6950 will almost run the same but in the future you could be confronted with games that need quad cpu but nobody knows when that's going to be. You can easily upgrade your board then with an i5 processor. Amd is cheaper though and for almost the same price of an i3 you have phenom X4 (quad) , the athlon quad should be avoided since they have no L3 cache. The I3 uses hyperthreading that means they uses 4threads instead of 2 that a dual core does so it acts as a quad core. How this will perform in the future remains to be seen. Anyway price /quality wise an phenom X4 with at least 3 ghz and a hd 6950 would be your best bet if you want to think about the future. If you want to go cheaper and decide to buy a dual core buy an i3, and as a card i would go for a minimun of the hd 5770 (which works very nice and maxes out most stuff), or even the gtx 460 which is even a tad better. If you think at the other end of the spectrum, the i5-2500k is the max i would go, and buy also a hd 6950 or even a gtx 580. Do know that you can software flash the bios of the 6950 to a 6970.
