After so many failed attempts of trying to get my sister to not buy a mac she still insists on buying one because that is what she wants. This is the cheapest one she could find

http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacBook-MC503LL-13-3-Inch-VERSION/dp/B0047DVVZO/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1333955663&sr=8-5

They don't look that great but all she wants to do on it is type papers, do stuff online like facebook, youtube, chat, and go to websites. and make them movies and photo albums, nothing too fancy. Since I can't get her to change her mind I figured I would at least make sure she isn't getting too ripped off when buying this, so are these specs good for what she wants to do?

You can't buy a Mac, without getting ripped off. Good god, they're charging nearly $1,000 for a six year old processor, 2GB and 128GB hard drive (yes, it may be an SSD, but you can't fit much on 128GB). If she wants to play with videos and picture, a better CPU and more RAM would help. Surely they must have something that gives you better value...

Nope, looks like they don't...

If she absolutely must go out of her way to make herself look like a hipster, I would say; look at the cheapest 13" Macbook Pro ($1,200).
Yes, it's still an absurd rip-off, but you get a much faster CPU, double the RAM and a reasonably sized hard drive (500GB).

Hope she'll be the one paying for it, lol.

I know you can't buy a mac without getting ripped off lol. I have tried telling her that but she wont listen to me. That mac was the cheapest new of any model. So if she did buy that model how bad would pictures and video suffer? Also if she needs something better how much further should she be willing to get ripped off by lol.

the next model up i would even consider is the 1.2k macbook's and that one is so far from breaking even on the part value.. it might as well not even have been starring at them.

While MBA tend to be the cheaper of the ultrabooks, that is really expensive for what you are getting. If she we really wants a MBA she might as well buy the new one that costs only $50 more. That said, if all she wants to do is browse the internet, check email etc, than save $500 and buy a $500 laptop.

If she is a teenager, and she only accepts a macbook then she just wants it because all her friends probably have it. Or maybe just to show off. And yeah I agree with the person who said let her buy it. It might teach her a lesson.

who is paying for the laptop? If she is then let her do what she wants, you can laugh at her after she pays out of her ass to do the same things you do on ur $400 laptop.

Yes she is paying for it and I think I may just have to let her waste her money and see for her self. I've looked at some $400 lap tops but I thought I heard somewhere that $400-500 usually break down quickly or is that just used ones?

You are trying to get her the cheapest one as long as it is a Mac? Talk about being brain washed by a brand.

There's no reasoning with Apple obsessed people. It's like trying to convince the Pope that God doesn't exist.

oi, yeah that thing's got some pretty outdated crap in it.

I live with an apple fanboy, so I know there's no changing their minds. I'd reccomend looking for refurbished ones, they're still guranteed to work and are a couple hundered bucks cheaper. And if you or seomone in your family is in college/university u can apply for student pricings on their actual website, might knock a few hundered bucks off.

and make sure to make fun of her 24/7 for having a fisher-price "my first computer" and tell her one day, if she trys real hard, she may be ready for a grown-up computer :)

if you're not paying for it, let her get what she want, her way. From my experiences with women, it's best not to meddle with their buying methods. The last thing you need is becoming the goat if something bad happens later on.

As for Macs.... It wouldn't be my first choice. But, as an owner of a Mac Mini, they're pretty decent computers despite what fanboys here will say.
