I got a "Custom Edition" of STALKER and it has a bunch of visual mods done to it, most notably the Nuclear Snow mod, which makes it look all black and white, like the film sin city...

EDIT: Having technical difficulties, search for "Stalker Nuclear Snow" on an engine if you'd like to see it.

2 misc. questions:

* I'm at the beginning of the game, and I've come onto a mission where I have to search some bridge or something.... and there are 3-5 baddies chilling there..... Should I just stock up on First-Aid and take them out?

* I'm running across an open plain, and some invisible blob thing kills me when I get near it.... what is that?

the blob things are radiation. Stay clear of them. If you throw bolts you can see where the explosions will happen. (throw it when you hear the beeping)

and yeah just take them out but make sure you have GOOD cover. atleast thats what i did

the game looks fine as is. though the screenshots do look really nice, if you're having trouble running it, just forget the mod.

and the blob thing is radioactivity. you can drink vodka to lessen their impact. in the second mission, the one where you have to go under a bridge, i didn't see any baddies around the truck - i only saw one dead guy, i think. you just have to go through the short tunnel, but the tunnel is hazardous to cross, so you'll have to take a swig of the vodka just before crossing it, and use bandages if you're getting low on health while crossing it. once you cross the short tunnel, there's no hazardous material. i think this is what you're talking about... not sure if it is though.

You're talking about the broken train bridge, with the military blockade beneath it? There are two ways other than fighting them to get past there. One is to stay far to the right of the blockade and go up to the fence lining the train tracks, then follow it back toward the bridge. There's an area where the fence parts away and you can cross the train tracks there. Once you cross it, stay off to the right quite a bit so the soldiers won't see you on the other side either. The other way is to go way off to the left of the bridge, where there's a small clearing with a bunch of blind dogs nearby. There's a tunnel you can go through that passes under the train tracks which has anomalies called electros throughout it (they look like small, electrically charged fields). They turn on and off in a pattern, so you have to go forward a little bit at a time and wait until the one in front of you turns off to go forward a little more.

The invisible blobs are a type of anomaly called a springboard (I think, though if it's killing you instantly, it might be a whirligig) caused by the nuclear meltdown of Chernobyl, much like the electros I described above. You just have to watch out for them and avoid them, much like the dozens of other anomalies throughout the game.

fireandcloud

Vodka gets rid of radiation poisoning, like anti-rad shots, it doesn't help against any anomalies. It most definitely isn't going to help against the electros in the tunnel, they just do electric damage, no radiation.

I'll say. Running straight through a line of electros and with vodka screwing your vision up to boot? Lucky as hell.

Yeah that's what I ended up doing.

I'm starting to like this game, it just has a bit of a rough learning curve. I killed two random dudes and I have a sawn-off shotgun and a silenced pistol now..... Pretty sweet.

Guess I'm the only one who killed them all, then? Its not too hard, walk up to the leader and shoot him in the face quick, and if you can grab hit gun and ammo, then retreat and pick the remaining soldiers off. You end up with a nice bit of ammunition and medkits.

Yes, but I find it's better to not be on the military's bad side at the beginning of the game in case you ever run into any of them unexpectedly. Without some sturdy body armor and reliable assault weapons, taking on soldiers can be pretty difficult if you get surprised by an encounter with them.

Personally I hated Sin City and it's bastardized noir graphic style.

In answer to your questions though, I think you can talk to the seargent at the bridge and pay your through but I'm not sure. I just went up to the right side, hid behind the train and unloaded shotgun shells on anyone who came close enough. I think at that stage it is probably the toughest fight will have fought.

The thing killing you is probably and anomaly. There are less of them if you stick to the roads. If you're still early in the game it's best that you just try to avoid them. Get your bolt out and throw it around before walking somewhere you haven't been. If you can't defeat the guys at the bridge then you can use that method to go through a certain tunnel that goes through the hill to the left of the bridge.

BTW you will have to fight the military sooner or later.

Stick with the game, it is a very steep learning curve but it becomes amazing once you get better equiped. I think it looks fine without modding.

Probably not. I just leave them alive toward the beginning just in case I do come across any others toward the beginning. You're going to have to fight military soldiers at one point or another anyway (the main quest pretty much requires it).

Dont forget-- you can also get a STALKER suit right in the beginning. (hidden in the attic of the house near the end of the road) It honestly makes it more fun, especially when your starting out and learning. You have some good armor and you don't die as fast.

As for the mods it looks killer. This game is just creepy as is though. Just has a really dark/cold vibe.. Awesome..

Are you sure that's not one of the randomized caches that usually have nothing in them and you didn't just get lucky? Or is that one of the areas that have a set item as standard?

I've tried that mod took a nice performance hit but not in a way for unplayable, on the random caches I believe you haven't found the PDA that goes with it telling you about them I could be wrong now with all the patches out haven't played STALKER in a long time, also if you get your hands on some weapon mods do it, because the weapons in STALKER are kind of not realistic when you have to unload a whole AK clip into a guys chest to drop him

Actually for the train bridge guards...do this..

Run up to them and shotgun the leader....run back to the second or third tree..kneel in the shrubs at the bottom of the tree( left side of road)...wait for them to line up like ducks and take them out with headshots with the silenced pistol.

If you use a silencer and are concealed they can't see you to shoot at you..and so will gather to a spot about 20 yards away..

Cheesy I know...but you'll get a decent gun sooner...

Yeah you can sneak over or go to the end and cross...or even go through the drainagetunnel....

I just do it because it's fast and easy...andI get a better gun sooner. ( I do it right after you free the first guy...Nimble?)

Or you can sneak over and lure a bandit patrol toward them and the guards will take them out and you just clean up...

Yes, this one is always there.. it's not random.
here u go:

At the very beginning of the game, you need to talk to a stalker named Wolf in the Cordon newbie camp. Behind Wolf is a ladder that leads to an empty backpack in the attic.

Climb the ladder but do not enter the attic. Instead, walk around the ledge formed where the roof and walls meet. You can work your way onto the roof of the house that way.

Once on top of the roof of this house, there is an identical house north of the one you are on. You can sprint and jump to the roof of that adjacent house (you take a little damage).

When you get to the second house's roof, carefully make your way to the side with a hole in the roof -- just past it, you should be able to make out a wooden crate you can destroy. If you spoke to Wolf and accepted the mission to rescue Nimble, you should have a pistol.

Shoot the wooden crate and a Stalker suit will be inside. Simply grab it and you'll be immediately better off than you think you could be!

Follow "Bes" around like a puppy dog after you have the carpark area fight in Garbage. When he is killed (and it won't take long) take his gun. Its a silenced AK 74/U. You'll love it, ...at that point of the game (you get better guns later).

Umm, ...that's not altogether true. Actually, by the 5 time I played this game (12 times total) I could sneek into the base at Agroprom grab the secret report package and just have to kill 1 or 2 guys in that top floor room.

Also, ...get to know your PDA. The maps show where you are and where to go but look for purple circles (they are stashes and collect those goods). Also, sometimes when you check a dead body for goods it will make a beep sound. You just found a new stash on one of the maps when you hear that beep.

One last thing and I'll leave you alone. Meet with "Guide" and follow his instructions. Also, choose to "join" when the time comes, you'll understand what I mean by then (there are 7 endings to this game).

If you want the ultimate experience, ...the 2nd time you play the game then I'll tell you how to gear up early in the game but you should play it on your own the first time through and enjoy!

Probably not. I just leave them alive toward the beginning just in case I do come across any others toward the beginning. You're going to have to fight military soldiers at one point or another anyway (the main quest pretty much requires it).

Umm, ...that's not altogether true. Actually, by the 5 time I played this game (12 times total) I could sneek into the base at Agroprom grab the secret report package and just have to kill 1 or 2 guys in that top floor room.

That's why I said "pretty much." It's fairly difficult to sneak there without killing any soldiers, nearly impossible to get to the documents without at least killing the guys in the building, and literally impossible if you take the underground path there (since the military base fight between the soldiers and stalkers has you help out the lead stalker when he gets pinned down, meaning you have to kill the soldiers, and the underground path he takes you to is filled with soldiers that you can't avoid).

walk up to the leader and pay him off. purple_MAN1832

Lol, the first time I saw him, he was bieng a Dick, and saw all those guys with their AK-74u's and I was like :o...sweeeet!

shot the leader in the face, and faced off the entire squad, many medkits, bandaids, and a bunch of bread (who bakes these anyway?), soup, and ammunition later, I took them all down lol, man that was really fun, but gosh, that early in the game, a gun battle like that is really hard, and the AI isn't stupid so if you stab/shoot someone stealthily and you're pretty much the only person who would have done that, they'll just start shooting at yeah, it's pretty much inevitable to either pay, or face them off, so I just said "eh, whatever man!" and decided to go ahead and kill them all after a few failed attemtps at a stealthy approach.

and holy crap that mod looks AWESOME!!! Getting it now, and I HOPE it works with the latest patches.

* I'm running across an open plain, and some invisible blob thing kills me when I get near it.... what is that?

seems like you need to get "carrymod3" and install it first (and if you install it second, you just take out this one file, this is all in the readme.) but the problem is, I can't find it anywhere! Gah, I REALLY want this mod, but I'm just too tired and jetlagged to care and search right now lol.

True. You have a good point. I tend to separate areas but it is one mission. I play Hitman and that comes in handy at times of overwhelming force (and that base qualifies for Hitman tactics). Note (don't open if you haven't played the game through at least once)...
If you stand in the same spot and don't move (outside the exit of the catacombs and on the other side of the dumpster area) then look to your right and you can barely see a guard tower on the other side of the tree. Now look to your left and you will see 2 soldiers run up near you on the other side of the dumpster. They don't see you so don't move and they will take a left and head down to the guard shack farther down. Don't move and about a minute later 2-3 more will go the same route. Once they get to the guard shack its clear to move. Turn around and crouch on this side of the dumpster (the guard tower won't see you because the tree is in the way). Count to 7-1000 and exit the dumpster heading towards the main building and on the main path but to the right of the freight containers. When you get to the 2nd container then hit the X button and run to the door entrance. Once inside its all random as to the guard patrols (no patterns) but dont stop, go to your left and to a stairwell and take an immediate right to get under the stairwell. This is a good spot to save the game if you haven't been spotted up to this point since no one will bother you under there. If you have been spotted and want to turn off the sirens then kill the person or persons who spotted you. The sirens will stop. If you don't care then fight your way the rest of the way. It is a good idea to go back through the catacombs to escape the place. Its easier than any other route, IMO. Oh, and take the back way out through the electrical tunnel in the catacombs. The pattern is in your direction and its an easy and safer route. Plus there is a stash backpack located in a rock pile at the near end of the tunnel. If you have any extra stuff weighing you down then this is a good stash to lighten up your load. Also, the tunnel creates flash and moonlight artifacts if you want to hang around long enough to get them then just stand around on the rock pile and watch the bandits get zapped like bugs. Once you get back out of the catacombs, immediately start walking away from the exit since you will be surrounded by bandits but their guns haven't spawned yet.
