I'm trying to hook up my PC to a surround sound system, and it seems that the little port around the back of my machine with SPDIF written on it seems to be the way to do it. If I was in the market for a home cinema receiver to plug this into for Digital 5.1 sound or whatever, what kind of input am I looking for? Is SPDIF basically digital optical sound, am I looking for a receiver with 'digital optical' inputs on it? Sorry I know nothing about this stuff! Thanks for any help.
You'll want an SPDIF (sometimes called digital coaxial) input. It is NOT digital optical. They're both digital signals, but optical uses red light to transmit the signal and SPDIF uses electricity.
Here's an example of a receiver with 3 coaxial inputs that would work:http://www.harmankardon.com/product_detail.aspx?Region=USA&Country=US&Language=ENG&cat=REC&prod=AVR%20645&sType=C
