Hey, i was just wondering if you guys know of any games like Knights of the Old Republic. Not neccisarily have to be like part of the Star Wars universe, just similar game design. I was just looking for something similar, I really liked this game and I usually don't like RPG's that much. I played it back in 2003 and haven't really had anything to play games except the xbox until now.

Thanks in advance

I would check out KOTOR II, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, and Baldur's Gate. These are all Bioware games and are pretty similar. I have found that the only games really close to a Bioware game is another Bioware game.

Mass Effect is a game you need to get for sure. Same with KOTOR 2.

Didn't know they came out with a second kotor. How does it compare to the first? and is Mass Effect as good as kotor? I should have mentioned this in the first post, but im looking for spacey games. Which I assume leaves out Jade Empire and Baldur's Gate from the looks of the screenshots?

Now the guys are just telling you that you should try these games. But trust me, it's not should. You simply have to! These are all great games! And if you liked KOTOR, KOTOR 2 is just as good, if not better.

Really? you think its better than the first? that's hard to believe cause for me kotor was my first enjoyable rpg. Does it continue off the same story? cause if it does i might need to play the first again to refresh my memory.

Just as I said, KOTOR 2 is just as good. Almost the same thing, just a new story. And a great one I might add. Mass Effect is a bit different, but same in many aspects. It's an other reality, a new experience after Star Wars, but the RPG system is in many ways just like KOTOR's. Only it's a newer game with better graphics. Only it has an FPS like combat system, so it's real time. I like RPG to be role based, but that's just me. And it's not ruining at all. So both of these are musts, and should keep you busy for about 70 hours of playtime. And since you can be good, and bad in both of them, and they have open endings, you might even spend more time on these.

I wrote my reply even b4 saw your entry. I played both of them a while back, as I recall they have no connections what so ever, only some unimportant reference. Though I haven't played them in a while. It's good that you mentioned them. I might even do so.

I liked Mass Effect more than KOTOR II (never played the first). Jade Empire and Baldur's gate are not space themed games but have similar combat and dialogue.

You NEED Mass Effect. Like an earlier post said, it plays like an FPS, but there are a lot of aiming assists in the game, so even if your crosshairs are slightly off, the gun will shoot more in the direction of the enemy, but if you like aiming yourself you can turn them off. Skills also play a role in accuracy and weapon damage and stuff, so it still has all the RPG elements, don't worry about that. There's also "force powers" in the game too, just called biotic powers. They're the best part of the combat by far. It's just too bad the combat can get quite tricky at parts, yet insanely easy in others. It's kinda unpredictable, and can kinda suck at times.

But what Mass Effect is really known for is the most realistic conversation in any game to date. Talking with people is always a huge part of Bioware's games, and Mass Effect just steps it up so much. If you can, turn the subtitles off, it makes the experience twice as great. You really just have to see it to understand its utter awesomeness.

Anyways, now that I'm done ranting about ME's deliciousness, I'd suggest KOTORII as well. Sadly, I can't remember exactly how good that game is, because I only got to play it once before my dog chewed the hell out of the disc. I don't leave my discs out anymore, haha.

You know, this might actually have me wanting to play KOTOR again... for probably the eighth time. It's been quite a while.

you guys have me overly excited now, and now i've come up with more questions!

In mass effect is it a big world? or fairly linear?

Also, is the plot good? That's one thing that I loved about KOTOR, the story was soo immersive. I became so attached to that game.

KOTOR 2 has a pretty sketchy story so don't be expecting anything as amazing as the original KOTOR's story, but the gameplay is an improvement. All in all if you liked the first one then I can't see you not liking the second.

It's a great story. Not as well written as KotOR perhaps, but much better presented. Look, if you liked KotOR, you WILL like Mass Effect. No question. Unless interactions with your party was THE most important part of your liking KotOR, in that case, KotOR 2 is the way to go.

Mass effect has a vast explorable univers, with some side quests, and goals that require quite some time to accomplish, but pretty meaningless, however, these are optional, the main story is pretty linear with a couple of choices that have real effect on the overall income. The main plot is fairly good, but less than I've anticipated. Despite that the dialogs and the voice acting is great. I liked KOTORs story a bit more, as I can recall. And while playing KOTOR, I had the felling that I'm a powerful Jedi wandering around the galaxy, whilst playing Mass Effect didn't brought me the same feeling. But this is just me. The result is same. Play'em both! :D

I looked pretty hard but I could find nothing close enough to the gameplay and dialogue style of Bioware games to really reccomend. There are plenty of good RPGs out there but not ones that are quite like Bioware RPGs.

...oh and altough you don't have a direct command of your other party members during combat in Mass Effect, you still can change their gear, and make the choices after level up. In KOTOR II you have the same comands like in the first one. What I liked in both of them, is that all your teammates have charaters, personalities, own goals, and history that they might reveal during the game. Those guys from Bioware are really good at this.
