SIMS 3, Do you unlock items to buy as you play through???

I am on my second time playing the game and I have just built and furnished a new house, but when i was doing so the amount of items i could buy seemed soo limited compared to other games eg. no pool table... Is there, for instance, a pool table you can buy in the game? And so do you unlock more items as you play through to buy in "Buy Mode"?
