Not a big SP guy. I like FPS though, and am looking for some suggestions on some modern (within say 5, maybe 6 years) FPS that are absolute must plays. Nothing shallow, but a top notch PC shooter. For someone who really hasn't play much in the genre at all.

Crysis As much as I hate to say this, MW and MW2 both have excellent SP campaigns STALKER, STALKER clear Skies, STALKER Call of Pripyat BioShock 1 & 2 Metro 2033 some people swear by Cryostasis Borderlands (Although I recommend playing this online with 3 other people, coop campaign great fun) L4D 1 & 2 (Play the campaigns online too, very very fun) I've heard good things about Call of Juarez Bound In Blood

1.Dues ex 2.Half life 2 with episodes 3.Stalker shadow of Chernobyl with either stalker complete mod or oblivion lost mod which i prefer. 4.No one lives forever a spy in harms way (criminally underated game) 5.Crysis Dues ex and NOLF are both over a decade old but are amazing games and missing out on them because of the graphics is just stupid. I'd also like to give mentions to doom 3,far cry,cod 4,half-life,crysis warhead, and bioshock(have not played ss2).

I admit the Modern Warfare series has really good single player but I'd still have to say the winner goes to the Half Life series.

Just buy the orange box, Play Half Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2 and then Portal

Just about the best singleplayer games made.

Don't bother with modern warfare if your money isn't something you throw around with the MW2 singleplayer is a large mess anyways.

you bolded clear sky sky so i'm assuming you played that one first if so big mistake that was the weakest game in the series and even being a hardcore stalker fan didn't finish it still had some fun with it though. just not as good as the other 2 games.

I've always enjoyed the Call of Duties. The campaigns are totally awesome in every aspect. About others, I dunno but Call of Duty is a must-play for a FPS fan.

Also STALKER is a slow game, not fast paced by any means, but the entire series is very rewarding to play.

I don't know why I never thought of Bioshock as a fps but since it is I'd put it up there as one of my favorites.

Some FPS games with good Single Player campaigns over the past six years:

2004

Far Cry
Thief: Deadly Shadows
Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
Half-Life 2
Rainbow Six 3 Gold (Raven Shield + Athena Sword)
Call Of Duty + United Offensive
Medal Of Honor: Pacific Assault

2005

Brothers In Arms: Road To Hill 30
Quake 4
FEAR
SWAT 4

2006

Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth
HL2: Episode 1 + 2

2007

STALKER: Shadow Of Chernobyl
Crysis (maybe)
Bioshock (maybe)

2008

BiA: Hell's Highway

Since then, I can't really think of any FPS games that aren't 'shallow'. If you want lengthier single player FPS games, you really need to go further back to encompass some of the greats:

1997

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2

1998

Unreal
Half-Life
Thief: The Dark Project

1999

System Shock 2
Half-Life Opposing Force

2000

Thief II: Metal Age
Deus Ex
No One Lives Forever

2001

Clive Barker's Undying
Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis
Aliens vs Predator 2
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon
Return To Castle Wolfenstein

2002

Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault
Command & Conquer: Renegade
Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast
Soldier Of Fortune 2
No One Lives Forever 2

2003

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield
Vietcong
Tron 2.0
Hidden & Dangerous 2
Call Of Duty

Within the past half decade, I'd say the Half-Life 2 series, Crysis and the STALKER series are the least shallow. As for the shooters which are actually reasonably deep - tactical shooters - you'd have to ask somebody who's into those.

you find cod to be good single player? I cant even get through the entire campaign of any call of duty game, it just gets boring and feels like I may as well be playing a late 90's light gun shooter. Ill go with stalker, patched with stalker complete 2009.

FEAR. Excellent SP campaign.

airshocker
I have to admit i have replayed that many times and the expansions, but it kinda lack something in the single player. It felt like you were moving from corridor to corridor and all you did is to walk in rooms and turn on the slow mo and kill the same super soldiers again and again. It could use a bit, say killzone 2, or that mech thing they did in fear 2. Still a very enjoyable game, but they could add some variety in the gameplay.

I dont play games for story usually, and if I did the story in call of duty games is pretty much crap. Call of Duty is all about multiplayer, most people I know cant even stand call of duty single player.

F.E.A.R, Half-life, Bioshock and definitely all the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games for sure.

Consoles need more games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Aren't the devs working on a port?

Half Life series def. include all the episodes.

Crysis had a real nice storyline. if you can run it its a game you wanna play.

Alwaya personally liked the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter series. Good time to get into it now due to Future solider coming out.

Call of Duty a good bet. kinda short butstill sucks you in.

I know a lot of people didnt like the story very much, but as for me, I have to say Crysis is one of my all time favorites. The game is simply brilliant. Others I really enjoyed are Quake 4, Half Life series, Portal, Doom 3 (kinda shallow, but scary and fun nonetheless) and Call of Duty World at War. As for older games, I really loved (and kind grew up playing) the Quake 2, RTCW, Wolfenstein and Doom 1 & 2 campaigns.

I like transformes 2, but thats just happens, nothing serious about that. But seriously point me one first person shooter that does presantation and action in story better than cod4. I cant think of another game that the developers throw so many awesome parts during the compagin. In all those non linear open world game all you do is screw around without anything epic hapenning, just missions and sidemissions.

Believe it all you want, it's not going to make it true... :PDoom_HellKnight

Depends on what you mean by "true" if you ask 90% of the gaming crowd they will agree, therefore by the logic of the gaming population, its "true" by the logic of a better logical example.....well, feel free to point out an fps that does it better, because i cant seem to find any fps that does it better.

Well for story in a fps, I gotta go with the half life games. I really like that everything happens in game, I get a disconnected feeling when cool things happen in cutscenes. I also like the presentation in the fear games, bioshock and the chronicles of riddick.

Thats not what i meant. Take hl2 for example, it does not explain you what happened, you know what the main character would know without any prologue or explanation on what happend. I would say thats bad presentation since it does not present you anything, it just throw you in and lets you firgure out by yourself. Neither the npcs get the chance to talk to you a bit and explain you what happen. Fear is somewhat similar, after a quick briefing you are thrown into a recon mission to find someone and kill super soldiers all the way with various ghost appeareances and max payne style phone messages that tell the story. The truth is that story does not appear till the end. Also there is nothing noteworthy happening to grab the attention of the player (apart from the scary moments) or any good actions scenes like in half life. Its mostly corridors that you shoot the bad guys without any sense of epicness or duty or an objective. It kinda lacks the cinematic blockbuster feeling that cod has.

As for bioshock, well i guess it has a good story, but i cant say since i found it predictable and not amazing at all since all the plot twists/ outcomes were the shame as system shock 2 and it was like i was seeing the same game i have played so many times for one more time without anything new. So if i pick up ss2 right now i can point out that ss2 has various emails that the player hears and understands what goes on in the ship. Later the player will hear some crew logs and get some story on what happen before his arrival and where did the crew go to get that infestation in the ship and what happen at that moment. While it has a good story, still its not what i was referring to. What i was reffering to is a blockbuster cinematic presentation with alot of action . That only cod 4 has done so well.

What i am gonna say now contains hl2 , episode and cod4 SPOILERS dont read if you dont wanan get spoiled.
Let me make another example. Crysis has the same blockbuster cinematic way to tell a story but it lacks any noticable characters to feel an attachment (like Alyx or Price) and it lacks those explosions or various events that happen in both cod4 and half life. (like the moment the ship is sinking in cod4 and you gotta get out, or when price throws the pistol to you so you can kill makarov, or when you are chased by metro cops in half life 2, or when Alyx's father dies in episode 2 with a cliffhanger) Thats the stuff i was reffering to, all those noteworthy story moments and various events during the compaign that dont appear in nonlinear games such as stalker. The only way those moments can be done is by lineariaty, thats why i liked metro 2033 more than stalker.
Crysis: If you like big, wide, sandbox gameplay, you'll love Crysis

Modern Warfare 1 and 2: If you've ever played a Call of Duty game.... go for it

Bioshock: Like Half-Life? Play Bioshock. Great adventuring, great atmosphere.

Because a prolouge is a lazy way of explaining prior events.

Beauty of HL2's narrative is the way the scene is set, as the player is informed gradually. This is grade A storytelling as far as shooters go.

The only problem is that while it is very dense in building atmosphere and player empathy (also in the way it uses its technology), it relies entirely on scripting and very very traditional established practices to tell its story.

This. One of the most replayable FPS games out there by far and that's before you get into the mods.

Also I would like to suggest Borderlands, it's one of my favorite FPS games in recent times, but apparently it's quite polarising so you'll either love it or hate it.

Beauty of HL2's narrative is the way the scene is set, as the player is informed gradually. This is grade A storytelling as far as shooters go.

The only problem is that while it is very dense in building atmosphere and player empathy (also in the way it uses its technology), it relies entirely on scripting and very very traditional established practices to tell its story.skrat_01

To be honest i would prefer more explanations from the npcs, i had to look online to figure out what happen and who the hell where the combine. Also i like scripted events. I guess thats why i liked metro 2033.

This. One of the most replayable FPS games out there by far and that's before you get into the mods. Also I would like to suggest Borderlands, it's one of my favorite FPS games in recent times, but apparently it's quite polarising so you'll either love it or hate it.the_mitch28

Yeah both amazing games, allthough i liked borderlands more.

Amazing how so few have mentioned No One Lives Forever 1 and 2, each of which is better than 3/4 of that list at least.
Crysis As much as I hate to say this, MW and MW2 both have excellent SP campaigns STALKER, STALKER clear Skies, STALKER Call of Pripyat BioShock 1 & 2 Metro 2033 some people swear by Cryostasis Borderlands (Although I recommend playing this online with 3 other people, coop campaign great fun) L4D 1 & 2 (Play the campaigns online too, very very fun) I've heard good things about Call of Juarez Bound In BloodRahnyc4

people talk about the stalker series so much. i went to buy the game on steam played it and its too boring and slow.

yeah thats how most people feel until they either get the stalker mod or read reviews and give it another try. I didn't play it for very long till like five months after i bought it. Then i finished it and bought call of pripyat which i would rate almost as good, except the beggining is super slow and the ending was pretty freaking hard.

thats because its an open world rpg, not just an fps. rpg is very inventory/loot-based and faction-based. if someone just wants fps then rpg elements do not mean anything to them.
