I spent around 10 hours playing it. There are few tutorials, which help you with
around 10% of what you actually have to know. There's no campaign mode, just
random scenarios.
At first game might seem extremely complicated and deep with multi-tier upgrades
and so, the tech tree looks huge. Once you get to actual gameplay, it's kinda boring.
You don't get to experience most of the upgrades you do. Fighting itself is trivial at best.
You just point your main ship and let it take out whole fleet of pirates.
It might look like 3D game, but in reality there's no height element, so it's a
2D game.
I was no impressed and have no idea how GS gave it 9.0 to generate all
this buzz.

BS, try playing a whole game while not teching into anything against a competent oppenent. Your ships will be weak, vulnerable, your economy will suck(no trade ports if you dont tech up), resources will be low. Techs play a big impact on your empire and you can definetely see the changes.
The game is worth it, try the demo. It got a 9.0 from GS and other places(care to explain the rave reviews from just about every site that reviewed it, even smaller less known ones?) because they understood the game and what it achieved....you apparently didn't.
Also the game is 3d technically. Press D to move on the Z axis and even ships will move on it without telling you(especially on battles with large fleets). It doesn't hold a tactical importance but it looks cool as hell. Ya there is no campaign mode....would you knock down Civ4 for not having one, practically the same concept in terms of the scenarios.
Its a pretty good game.. slow paced than most RTS games but its pretty good. Games go on for quite a while and time FLIES when your playing which i consider a bad thing. I don't like playing for what feels like 10 minutes to find out its actually been 2 hours.
Try out the demo and see for yourself. There are better RTS games out there like Company of Heroes. But Sins of a Solar Empires is still good.
Forums are generally used for a discussion. "Is it worth it" is really not a subject worth discussing because its entirely biased.SKaREO
Wrong! You can get information to make a educated decision on your purchase.
Sin differs from many rts becuase of its epic nature. There is no resource gathering in the typical sence. You start with one planet and must upgrade its population for taxes and set up mining factories. You must also constantly upgrade your tech for warfare, mining, population and varoius things. (depth) The more planets you conquer the more resources you can put into your war machine. The varoius units have a rock, paper scissors strategy to them. Your capital ships gain experience and are the center piece of your fleets.(depth) You can also conquer planets through propaganda. There are varous defenses that can be researched to defend your planets also. There are diplomacy options where you can make allies and Artifacts that can be found to give you a bonus. The Battles can be MASSIVE! Becuase of the scale of the game it is slower paced then alot of other rts's but with so much to do that is a blessing. If you have ever played Total War2 this is what I would compare it to(but in space with MP) Hope this helps you make up your mind.
oh i see, I read his first post and it said to list "pros and cons" and also he wasn't sure if this was his kind of rts. So the question is not, "is it worth it" it is "would I like it?" or "pros and cons of SoaSE" or "what type of rts is SoaSE?" etc.
If you like Homeworld and you like Civilizations, I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy this game.
