An improved wireless version of the Razer Hydra Motion tracking controller. Same fundamental technology, more refined process.

Sixense, a pioneer in motion tracking hardware and software, announced today that it will launch the Kickstarter project for its new wireless motion tracking platform, the STEM System, on September 12, 2013 at 7:00 AM PDT. The STEM System will provide the most natural and intuitive interface possible for gaming, virtual reality (VR), and other applications by precisely capturing the users every move, both at the desktop and throughout the living room.In order to facilitate a robust developer community, the STEM System is designed as an open platform for creators of both software and hardware products. Developers will be free to create content with virtually no restrictions, and to embed STEMs for tracking of their own peripheral or wearable devices, such as swords or head-mounted displays. The second-generation Sixense SDK for the STEM System platform takes advantage of the new platforms capabilities, and provides backwards compatibility with products and games powered by earlier generations of Sixense motion tracking technology, including the Razer Hydra. The STEM System platform is an evolutionary step in Sixense motion tracking technology, which has previously powered the Razer Hydra PC gaming controller, the input device of choice for developers of VR applications. Advancements for the STEM System platform include much longer range, a wireless, modular form factor, and better tracking performance at all ranges. The STEM System platform will support up to five wireless motion tracking modules, or STEMs, for full position and orientation tracking of the entire body or other configurations.

some of what i just saw awakened a boyish excitement but really, i don't know.. i get the appeal of feeling like you're in the gameworld but i never got the appeal of acting out what you do in the game in the real world, if that makes sense. so oculus rift is something i'd like to try but i don't really care to be dancing on the spot or be acting out things i'm not really doing. well maybe it would be fun for a bit but practical constraints and my inability to see the added value in the games i like to play make me think this won't be a big hit. to people that have programming skills i imagine this would be a world of fun but to me this is just one of those typical things where you need to ask yourself why they need kickstarter to fund it before you jump on.

VERY pleased that so many companies are coming out with entry level VR products because its pushing that industry forward.  I do still think we are a WAYS from a fully fleshed out/functional system but its still great to see.

But, the best reason to fund is still...to get an early one and sell er.  Oculus?  I nabbed 3, sold each for $650 or more...gogo kickstarter!
