There is a free 3GB texture pack DLC in the steam store.  I have read elsewhere that the modded textures are actually better (2k).  I am using a few such as "better females by bella" and a couple others.  I don't really care too much about the textures on foliage and the ground, so I don't know that it is even worth the download.  I also read that it has to download the 3GB file every time you play it unless you run Steam in offline mode, but perhaps I am reading this wrong.  And there is no way to uninstall it unless you completely reinstall Skyrim or contact Bethesda and ask them to remove it.  If you seriously have to do a 3GB download before you play, I am gonna have to pass for sure.

Anyway, I was wondering if it is even worth it if anyone has experienced both modded textures and the official DLC res pack.  I might want to put some mods on top of the DLC anyway.

Well, you definitely don't have to redownload the whole thing every time you play. But either way, don't bother with the official HD textures. If you've got the extra power to use HD textures, get the Skyrim HD 2K Textures on the Skyrim Nexus. Here's one of the many comparison pics from the nexus page, showing the Official HD textures vs the Skyrim HD 2k textures. Open in a new tab for full 1920x1080.

It wouldn't make any sense for them to make you re-download it every time.  But seriously, copy and paste the 1st link to your browser and read the section under BUGS.  It insinuates that it re-downloads which sounds like it was already downloaded once.  That would be absurd if it were true.  Can anyone that has this installed confirm or deny this please?

The difference is quite obvious without pulling it out to 1080p.  Still, I am not so sure how my system will handle it.  Specs below obviously.

What that link is saying is that once you activate the Texture Pack DLC, Steam will recognize it as part of the game, and if you unistalled and went to reinstall the game or went to install it on a different computer it would download the texture pack automatically with the rest of the game. It will not redownload itself each time you start the game. Once it is downloaded you not need to use it either, you can disable it in the options.

Ok, that makes more sense to me now.  I hadn't considered it becoming a part of your game permanently from computer to computer or upon a reinstall.  I knew there had to be no way they would do something that absurd, but that is just how I read it.  Good to know that it can be disabled too.  I am assuming it shows in the load order or graphics options.

I would assume it gives you a checkbox in the graphics options. I never used it though. How much VRAM does your video card have? If it's more than 1gb, I don't think you'll have any problem with the 2k textures. Also, there's the "full" and "lite" versions of the 2k textures, both available on the same page. The Lite version has textures about half the resolution of the ones in the comparison screen, but even that is still about 2x the resolution of the official HD textures.

No, it does not re-download. System performance is roughly the same. I'm still getting 60fps. I am not using any other mods.

HD texture packs don't really lower your performance if you have enough video memory. You might see longer load times though because there's more data being loaded but the general framerate after the area has been loaded won't really be affected.

You will see no difference in visuals, only longer loading times and you will have to download like 3-4 gb more always.

If your pc can handle them get those hd 2k from skyrim nexus.

I only use serious HD retexture which basically retextures rock, landscapes, grass, etc..

The 470 has 1280mb. I might try the lite first just to see if I get any stuttering or FPS drops. If everything is smooth sailing, I might bump it to full.

You can uninstall the official HD pack. Just go into the Data Files option when you first launch the game and de-select them. There should be two of them. I don't use the texture pack anymore. It killed my performance. I think it was conflicting with the real water texture mod I had installed. Now I just use real water, glowing ore veins and map roads. I'll try out some of the other mods once I've finished the game. The ones I have are just what I need to enjoy the game.
