5 to 8 minutes is a long time. mine starts up in under a minute.

do virus and malware scans
defrag your hard drive
disable programs that run on startup you don't need
uninstall programs you don't use
run Disk Cleanup
download CCleaner and clean up your registry

does it spend ages on the windows loading screen or after it starts to load all the startup services? if you going into msconfig and startup turn off all the junk you don't want to start up every time windows starts. you only really need the graphic drivers antivirus and a few other services.

Might be easier to back everything up and reformat...you could spend hours getting it to start fast again or you could do a full reinstall =]

By default, Windows only uses one core to start up. Enabling more cores can improve the start up time. Click start, then run. Type msconfig . Then go to boot and you can enable multiple cores. Hope this helps.

Don't use msconfig, use services.msc. start > run > services.msc

Well it sounds like a virus, but you should make sure to turn off all of the stuff in services (this will help whether you have a virus or not). Only having the necessities will allow the computer to start up faster, run faster, and have more memory. Are you running XP or Vista because if you are in XP you have to use msconfig (which you can do in Vista as well but services seems easier) to change start up stuff.

windows is probably a bit broken the easy fix is often to reload windows if turning off all the startup services doesn't make any difference.
