Game is incredible. I'm using the Blood & Steel mod, and I've used TweakMB to raise skill limits and tweak reputation gains a little. I'm addicted.
Been playing Mount and Blade since the old .808 beta. As for Warband only just bought it now. The online is pretty fun with 100v100 50v50 battles and it's definitely the games primary strength. It's enjoyable, if a bit shallow. But I don't regret buying it. Karl319
Get the cRPG mod.
Warband is awesome, but it is challenging. Its also repetative, ive been doing nothing but killing raiders and thieves and doing the occasional "quest" for royalty for a few hours.
When does the "epic" kick in? When do I get a castle, and army, etc? Does it take a few dozen hours to get there?

If you want battles, you want to visit the kings of the factions and ask to offer your sword up in vassalage. You'll then join their faction, and if they're at war with anyone, take on enemy armies and siege castles. You earn fiefs by requesting them once they're taken, or try and take them yourself. If you get high relations with a king, persuading them to give you recently-taken fiefs should be simple. The more challenging method is to not join any faction and try and take a castle on your own. Warband AI is alot smarter though so they come in force to retake it from you, so you'll need to try and persuade other lords to join your faction.

Tried the demo, but for some reason the outdated menus and presentation just kill it for me.F1_2004
I'd reccomend giving it a chance as this is really one of those games where gameplay> graphics, you'll discover once you get into it that it's a lot deeper than you think + the combat is pure win, then theres the multiplayer and all the future mods to come out. To put it simply its an amazing game don't be put off by the slightly dated presentation.
The original had a half finished feel to it. and the economy was extremely predictable.. Find good for less that 10 credits each, buy them up because you're sure to find a place to sell it at a profit, somewhere. But the orginal also has user made modules that tried to fill in the incompleteness that aren't compatible with Warband.
Main difference, though, seems to be that you couldn't have your own kingdom, and you couldn't get married. And there was no tutorial plot line to follow for the opening. There was also no bandit lair capturing, that I can remember. Can't comment on the other stuff because I've only played Warband for about 5 hours, total. I think the orginal had a lot less troop commands, too. Oh, and moral wasn't a factor in battles, as far as them retreating on their own. In the orginal the troops would never run away, on either side.
