I have to disagree on the blandness. It has a charm to it, and the quests have more story involved than most mmorpgs. The book quests and many of the big instances are just stunning. I have had some of the most fun group adventures I have ever had in this game. Even many of the solo quests are an adventure. This expansion has jam packed the game with endgame content.
As a current player, I have seen a surge in the population since the expansion. If you go to mmorpg.com and check the forum there for the game, you will see lots more players saying the same thing. This is a very well-populated game.
Sounds like youve played WoW and had your fill of that type of MMO.
I suggest you look into EVE online. It might be the differnt type of MMO youre looking for. If you can get past the steep learning curve (go join a corporation early, they can be very helpful...and DO THE TUTORIAL!) its a very rewarding gamewith an excellent community and a lot of depth. There is a good free trial out and I think you can get it off Steam for like 20 bucks or something and it contines off your trial (14 days free trial, plus 30 days included with game purchase, equals 44 days for 20 bucks).
I know you came looking for answers about LOTRO but it seems like youre looking for an MMO in general. LOTRO is good, but like people said the community is small and spread out over too many servers. Its also too mature in some ways; nobody really jokes around and socializes, its all business really.
