...And i can't watch anything with it, WMP doesnt work, VLC doesnt work, WMP Classic doesnt work, i've tried tons of codecs, i've tried Powerlink PowerDVD but it says the trial version can't watch bluyrays. I'm running out of Ideas here...

Is there anyway to watch Bluyrays without buying 3rd party software?

AFAIK, nope. You gotta buy some software if it didn't come with any.

You will need to purchase the codec if your drive didn't come with one, try the Community Codec Pack or "obtain" it by "browsing" the internet with search terms. This is like then Windows XP came out and it didn't have native out of the box DVD playback for the longest of times.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll be getting some software soon, as I now have Firefly and the original SW Trilogy on bluray but can't play them. This does seem silly.

Just wondering, what monitor/TV will you be using with it ? Also good luck with the software, Blu-Ray is totally awesome in my opinion, much better than DVD.

This is what I'm using: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236049 As for the disc not coming with any software. It came with a Bluray program for transfering files to a disc, but not for playing them. I can check again just to be sure but I'm fairly certain it only came with Cyberlink Power2Go.

I have the same monitor. Blu-rays look awesome on it.

This. If your expensive optical drive didnt come with the required software then well assume that it did. ;)

But seriously a bluray drive SHOULD come with powerDVD license thats how it is mostly you shouldnt be the one ripped off unless you got the drive at a really low price.

Quality of what exactly? Media?

-Higher quality movies due to less compression.

-Higher data transfer rates.

No.

Nope. You don't need one unless you plan to be watching movies or burning your data onto Blu-rays.
