It was on sale for like 15 USD. I'm such a cheapskate...only game I bought the week it came out was Terraria... That aside, I thought I'd ask all of you how do you rank Dragon Age 1 compared to more recent games? I ask because a lot of people seem to rank games that are (not antique but) pretty old, like oblivion, devil may cry, and Team Fortress 2, much higher than a lot of the more recent games, like the Witcher 2. Since I bought it I thought I'd get your opinions, how does DA1 compare on your scale?

It will be all of personal choice, but dragon age origions is one of my favorit games. Not sure if you mean dragon age 1 or dragon age 2, personally if you mean dragon age 2, most games out are better than it IMO. But if you mean dragon age 1, then I say it stands on even ground if not better than most the games that are out right now. Again this is my own thoughts on the matter and everyone else's may vary.

Dragon AGE 1 is one of the few RPGs in recent years where I actually felt like I was playing an RPG. The reason you don't see it compared to a lot of recent games is because games with that kind of gameplay aren't made a lot anymore. It's closer to turn-based strategic, than most of what passes for RPGs today. Experimenting with builds, equipment, battle tactics, moral choices, what have you... all of it was more reminiscent of old-school RPGs than of modern ones, with the exception of The WItcher, that is. And I agree with megagamer, it may be a couple of years old now, but Dragon Age 1 is as good or better than a lot of what's out today, at least if you're an RPG fan. :)

I don't think any of those games you listed are old except DMC, which was like a decade ago... I still remember seeing the commercial and buying it the same day, good times good times. Anyway DAO is very current and very good if you ask me. How good? I've been gaming since the 90s and the only RPGs I've ever been compelled to play were Japanese... until I saw DAO :D

Play the game and try it out for yourself. If you ask in the forums there always be a mix of views. Personally, I love the game. One of the best RPGs that came out this gen.

I love the game, I tryed to play the expansion though and just lost interest, having come back to DA after 4 months it was just a little overwhelming, way to many spells.

3rd best RPG released this gen, right behind Gothic 3 (1st place) and NWN2: MotB (2nd place).

Its a pretty good game. Its from Bioware and they know how to make good games. Whether it measures up to their...older RPGs, is another story but for 15 bucks! Good deal.

Personally I think it's a great game, but it's not for everybody. I suggest you give it a try and see for yourself.

It's a must play game if you like RPGs; one of the deepest, most epic out there. It's not for everyone, though - it's a very traditional fantasy theme, the combat's a little dry, unbalanced and exhausting e.g. Deep Roads has you fighting non-stop for hours.

Most people who play RPGs liked DA:O, myself included.

Just remember to look over your stats and skills before you make your choices when you level-up.:)

One of the best games to come out recently. It's a super long game, and I've beaten it 4 times now, and I'm actually playing it again right now! Keep it mod free your first time through but afterwards to don't be afraid to mod. Also, keep going through, the people who say it's boring probably either hate RPGs or got bogged down by the difficulty, it can be tough sometimes. Also, the fade sucks, but it won't last forever! It's the only part of the game that is just really really bad. Anyway, enjoy!

I thought it was awful. Was one of the most boring games I played recently, story was uninteresting, the "romance" stuff in the game was laughable at best. Although I never finished The Witcher, I thought some of the more intimate scenes I played were presented in a much better way.

Never got very far in the game. I've been meaning to play through it again at some point, and REALLY finish it.. but I keep dropping it for something else.

It'll never be anything as awesome as BG, so I keep thinking I should just go ahead and play that again instead.

edit: Thought I'd mention, the best RPG I've played in the last few years was most definitely Risen. Even with the last 1/4 of the game being the way it was, still blew me away.

It's good (for a modern "RPG") but not great and it has some pretty glaring flaws (hackneyed story, too many trash mobs, banal characters, useless skills, etc.) that I overlooked only because it was Bioware's first attempt at an honest cRPG in a very long time. I tried playing it a second time recently and was thoroughly bored but, for a single play through, it's not too bad. Be warned, The Deep Roads section of the game is mind numbing.

Its alright, I liked it a lot first game through but by the second run I started finding faults with it and the system where a blob of ink trails across the map as appose to you actually travelling vexed me.

I honestly haven't gotten past the village after the bridge brigand scene. Nothing in this game makes me want to play more. Drab graphics, a boring vanilla fantasy world, unlikeable characters (why isn't there an option to tell Morrigan to stfu? It's hinted at), so much lore being presented in text slowing down the action, new characters constantly being added and removed from the party, killing any sense of continuity in the gameplay as I waste time managing characters that are going to die in 10 minutes. The game pisses me off too with how it doesn't offer roleplaying options where they really matter. Like in the City Elf storyline I'd never have gone along with what the main character is stupidly goaded into doing. Same with the Grey Warden initiation scene. The introductory part just manages to leave me bitter and angry at the game.

I love DA:O personally. The only thing that bothers me about it is that it killed all my RGP fun in older games because relatively speaking it looks amazing. Anytime I try to play NWN2 or BG2 I just end up wanting it to play and look like DA. Also I agree that you should do your first play through without mods and then mod the crap out of it. The last play through I had a party of three hot ass mages with one hot ass rouge. I used a respec mod and had all my mages balanced out and Leliana running around as a backstabbing killer. For me having three mages in DA:O= hours of fun.

DA1 is not very good, highly overrated, and DA 2 should never have made. Go and die bioware.

It's a very good game, but the expansion is much worse. Basically none of the dlc are worth it as well. The game is also very unbalanced. Some skills are so much better than others that it makes you wonder what the developers were thinking.

It's okay to ask for opinions, but keep in mind that not everyone that posts in this forum is a PC gamer. The PC Version of DA:O outperforms the other platforms (see review).

The vast majority of PC gamers will tell you DA:O is a good game.
