After the 3ghz amd 6000+ i kinda got lost. Can someone please tell me what all this x2 x3 and x4 phenom stuff and all that is. And possible a list or link to the order they cam out including the processors and speeds. Which is the best amd processor now? And why is a 3ghz quad core intel better than a 3ghz quad core amd? Please advise - thanks

The best AMD Processor out right now is the Phenom II X4.. Specifically the Phenom II X4 965 which is a 3.4ghz quad core. The Phenom II's are approximately equal to a high-end Intel Core 2 Duo or quad at the same clock speed (meaning one of the E8000 or Q9000 series). The overall most powerful CPUs out right now are still the Intel i7's, which has been the case for well over a year. The AMD Athlon II's are basically Phenom II's with no level 3 cache, so they don't perform quite as well clock-for-clock.

The Intel i7's use a completely different architecture than the Core 2's, and of course any AMD chip. That's why they perform better at the same or lower clock speed than these older/less advanced designs. The i5 is a slightly less powerful chip than the i7, and is probably the 2nd-best choice for building a good bang-for-the-buck gaming PC right now with some serious horsepower. The Phenom II X4's are the best for this, IMO.

basically the x# is generally accepted as the number of cores that cpu has.. phenom x3/x4/x2 are all am2+ cpu's with 2/3/4 cores BUT the phenom II x2/x3/x4 are all am3 platform cpu's same can be said for the athalons.

Don't spend a fortune on the CPU for a gaming PC. Try get as good a graphics card as you possibly can, even if it means you'd end up with a Core 2 Duo.

I would never advise going socket 775 in a new gaming PC nowadays. It is so much more cost-effective to go AM3, and future-proof to boot.
