A lot of stuff about that game is bad. The story, characters, voice acting etc. all of that stuff is dumb. Some aspsects of the combat and navigation are really cool and interesting though. I its got the best first persion melee combat ive ever played, and that rope Bow is great.

How do you guys feel about it? am i alone?

Love it too, fantastic game, multiplayer is the best part of it, especially when you find people to play it with :P.

It was great fun when it was new, as it combined good melee combat with the source engine - being able to use all those physics traps against enemies was so much fun - ice on the floor and watch them slide onto spike traps - collapse wooden supports to crush enemies - fire that could spread so long as you put something ignitable next to it.

One of my top games of all time. Can't wait for Arkane's new game.

Combat engine was way ahead of its time, and it was a very good game at its time of release. Can't really take it seriously now days though as the scripted events are too obvious and out-dated in their execution.

Lots of bugs and crappy animation, really crappy. The combat has good ideas but is very poorly executed.

The combat wasn't really poorly executed at all, it was actually very well done.

I liked the combat a lot. The story was ultra generic and it felt a bit grindy in parts.

Masculus
It has by far the best combat ever created, together with Gothic 2 and small games/mods like M&B and Age of Chivalry (they're making a Chivalry game atm), nothing comes even close, any popular game from the last several years is a complete joke, like the TES series, Witcher series, etc.

I feel it's one of the few games that actually deserve to be called underrated.

The combat was insane. Absolutely insane. The only part that I dislike are the friggin annoying ghouls. Sure, the story could have been better and the character system more detailed, but the game in its length was BRILLIANT.

It's really sad that it received so little recognition when its combat makes other games' combat look like an archaic mess six years after it was released (I'm looking at you Skyrim, nevermind Oblivion that came out six months earlier).

I'm just going to answer the title directly.

I loved Dark Messiah. Its one of my favorite games. In spite of that, it fell short on a TON of potential. I think they nailed first person melee/magic better then any game up to this point. Skyrim is actually very satisfying in melee, considering Oblivion sucked a big one. Warband I put about equal with Skyrim on the combat. And as it is with DMoMM, Combat is what its all about.

To that end, if you feel the same way as me, check out this game (Kingdoms of Amalur: Recoking)

Combat Diary:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyu38nXLcko

Website: http://reckoning.amalur.com/

I actually know very little about the game. I've read a bit about the character progression a month or some ago and it sounded really cool. Very open ended and up to the player to decide what you are as a fighter. Very much so like DMoMM, but with more skill paths it seems. I kinda said "Eh, cool" and shrugged it off and never looked again until I saw the combat trailer today. If you actually watch the diary up to the end you can really see some kick ass combat and it is explained pretty well. It reminds me of a hybrid DMoMM and Devil May Cry combat. Its suposed to have substantial RPG elements as well (beyond combat skills, ie story etc)

Good game. Would like to see it carried over into a new engine. Not a remake, but a sequel of some sorts running on a new engine.

Nice to see some fans of this game. I also thought that this game was underappreciated. Kicking enemies around never got old ;). Dishonored, in development at the same studio, is the game I look forward to most in 2012.

I liked this game alot more then Half Life 2. At least this game had some decent gameplay ... despite the game being plagued by bugs. I am actually hoping for a sequel of some sort but polished this time!

it's one of the very few games i have decided to play more than once and I hate replaying games i've already beaten. if oblivion and skyrim had a comparable combat system they would have been much, much better games

It had the combat I wish Oblivion had. It's a great game actually, especially when you can do something like this.

It feels more like an Fps instead of Rpg. And that's dissappointed me.

I regreat buying it. i only managed to get to some part where you get attacked by a dragon and then i stopped playing it. The game gets boring waaaay to fast, what's worser i can't even play the MP anymore since the game is registered on an old Steam account i made in 2007. Don't know the password, secreat answer or even the e-mail adress anymore.

I guess I was lucky that I played Dark Messiah before Arx Fatalis. Otherwise I would have expected the same.

Yeah, I had a lot of fun with it. The melee in Mount & Blade: Warband is better, but the physics in DM make for much amusement.

i thought it was a great game. it was also something different, a fantasy first person shooter also, not enough games, especially shooters, contain dismemberment these days.
