Well EP2 will require a DX8 graphics card so if you don't have that you should definitely be upgrading. Here are valve's recommendations from the EP2 webpage.

Minimum: 1.7 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX 8 level Graphics Card, Windows Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

Recommended: Pentium 4 processor (3.0GHz, or better), 1GB RAM, DirectX® 9 level Graphics Card, Windows® Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

The source engine is VERY forgiving. The only reason you had trouble with Episode 1 is probably because of the HDR lighting. All you need to do in Episode 2 and Portal is disable HDR, Motion blur, and Depth of field, and it will essentially be like running Half Life 2.

just play with settings abit since EP1 & EP2 are basicallysame engine as HL2 but slightly modified with extra effects so try to turn down some like HDR or AF/AA
