Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'd like something where the game world is basically left in the hands of the player and almost anything is possible... like a group of players could take over a whole town and now that town is like officially a part of their territory. Even if its insanely hard and requires alot of team work amongst dozens of skilled people, the actual ability to really shape the game world that everyone else is playing in appeals to me more than something that is just doing missions and pvp.

I wouldn't really mind what setting it was. I'd like the combat to be somewhat challenging, but really satisfying once you get it down packed... but thats a secondary wish.

Does anyone know of free mmo like that?

Go retro... get the original Everquest. It still has an active community and it's so difficult, compared to the MMO's of late, that it will let you know that you are it's girlfriend. Now bend over!

You should wait for Darkfall Online. It sounds exactly like what you are talking about.

Before that comes out, you should try the free trial for Asheron's Call. It is another old game like Everquest, but has more sandbox ****features.

If you want insanely hard team play on a massive scale and hundreds of towns to take over, you could try Battlefield Europe. They have a 14 day free trial going at the moment and you can download the game at:

http://www.battlegroundeurope.com/

IMHO this is one of the best games ever made. It is also, unfortunately, one of the most underrated games ever made, mainly because of it's disastrous launch and the graphics which may appear to be dated. But the graphics are necassarilly this way because of the massive size of the single, seamless map with thousands of players on it at any one time and the sheer complexity of the flight models, ballistics models, damage models, research, development and supply systems etc. Everyone would need a super computer to run all this if the game had graphics the likes of Crysis or COD4.

This game is innovative and revolutionary in so many ways. It has the largest seamless map of any game, the most complex, realistic flight models, ballistic models and damage models of any game, the dynamic frontline system (which has since been copied by games like Planetside and Frontlines: Fuel Of War), a complex supply system which stretches from the towns on the dynamic front line to the destructible factories located hundreds of miles away in the rear towns and cities. These lines can be cut by capturing towns along the route or bombing the factories. Another innovative feature of these factories is the fact that the enemy's ability to research, develop and build better equipment can be slowed and eventually stopped by bombing them. The game also has the innovative ranking structure wich enables players to start out as a lowly rifleman and work there way up to squad leader, Brigade leader all the way up to either Allied or Axis High Command where they can guide thousands of players. So, this game can appeal to all types of player whether they just want to log in and kill stuff, tactical fans who want to be squad or brigade leader or the more strategic type who fancy planning the overall big picture in the Allied or Axis High Command.

I think it is miraculous what Cornered Rat Software has acheived, with such a tiny development team, in creating a game that is bigger and more complex than would ever be attampted by many of the big games development companies.

If you can look past the dated graphics and get over the near vertical learning curve I would highly recommend that you check this game out.

Final Fantasy XI is very addictive and has a butt load of content. The game has 20 jobs in total, which you can change at anytime your near a mog house. Costs a dollar more a month for each character, but you only need one.

Except for the whole 'free mmo' part, I'd agree with this.

What's so bad about paying $15 a MONTH for an MMO? Surely you can muster that kind of money even from chores or something. Quality and populated MMO's require a monthly fee, the only MMO that I can tell you that is good and is free is Guild Wars.

BS

and you won't really find any "free" MMOs like that. The onley game that I actually found that did that was intersteller war which was a browser based game were their was a whole universe to explore.

But the game shut down due ti the developer haveing to shut down for he could not support the game as most of the games money was comeing from player donations which their was alot.

I woulden't describe guild wars as an "MMO"

and its not free. you still have to pay for the game and the onley catch is theirs no online fees and such.

The only decent free MMO is Guild Wars.

Otherwise: suck it up and pay for World of Warcraft. I'm serious. That's how stagnant the genre is.

Surprised no one has said Vanguard. Vanguard is what you're looking for. Groups of players can take over a territory and create a town. Pretty sure the game is mostly player-run. And it's free. Haven't really played it, but I've heard it has a decently sized, dedicated community and has improved dramatically since launch.

I believe you can potentially make enough ingame money in EVE, which if sold for real currency, could pay for your subscription.

Im in the closed beta of Atlantica Online. Its actually pretty good for a free MMO. Its very easy to get a key for it. Guilds can own towns and the economy is 90% run by players.

I don't know of any pay to play MMO's like that, much less a FREE one. I don't know of any game that really lets you shape the world in the manner you are thinking of. Many MMO's have made lofty claims, but pretty much all have failed to deliver.

If you want to have SOME control of the world, well then WAR is about the only thing I can think of, with the RvR and sieging capital cities. That's about as close as you're going to get.

Age of Conan apparently has player built keeps? But from what I last read Siege warfare was still not added to the game, and the game is terribly unfinished and unbalanced. Wouldn't even waste my time with it.

Of course that opens up a whole can of worms. Nobody likes "gold farmers" or however you want to label them.

Oh ok, lol, I was just about to ask you when they completely overhauled Vanguard and made it free :D
