So I've recently got to playing KOTOR. I'm not very far; only about 12 hours in and I am enjoying it so far but I find that I'm beginning to feel a bit ambivalent towards this game and the reputation it seems to have. This game is fvcking buggy beyond BELIEF. After crashing to the desktop for what seems like the 20th time since I started playing, I'm ready to hang it up and uninstall this game. I've also faced the whole issue with the game pausing after battle sequences (though I've managed to fix that). The AI is also incredibly clumsy, and my team AI has gotten me killed on several occasions after blindly rushing into groups of enemies.

This game is a mess. How on earth does such a buggy ass game go untested and unpatched like this for almost ten years? What is honestly so great about this game and is there anything I can do to improve my experience?

Well, it's old. I don't recall having significant issues with bugs though.

Have you patched the game? Can't you toggle if they are going to be aggressive or passive? It has been awhile since I played Kotor but I had no problem whatsoever when I patched the game and played with a lot of mods. I guess the game is beginning to get unstable on newer OS, nothing strange about that though. Awesome game, either it's just not your thing or maybe the technical issues are getting the better of you.

Not gonna lie, it really has the potential to be very enjoyable if it weren't for the game breaking issues. I love the environments, I like the dialogue, I like how the character development works, the combat isn't too bad...but the game is a mess. As for patching, I bought it from Steam and was always under the impression that Steam always auto-patches the games fully (unless there's player-created mods and stuff that fix issues that are still left after the patches, I'm wondering if there's something like this for KOTOR by the way) so I really don't think it's that.

If there is an option to toggle passive/aggressive with the team AI, please let me know. It would help with the AI situation.

But either way, I might just quit playing altogether if I don't find a fix soon. Got plenty of other games in my backlog to play that won't have me pulling my hair out every day.

There's fan patches for both Kotor 1 & 2 to my knowledge that fixes a lot and I can't remember if there is a toggle for their behaviour. I recall that there was but I could be wrong.

Yes, KOTOR is one of the greatest games of all time, but I'm not familiar with there being many issues with bugs. I only briefly played the PC version as I played through it on XBOX, but in that time I can't remember anything breaking the game.

I'd say no, it has that typical bioware plot and the only really great thing about the game is the twist. Gameplay is horribly balanced and not very good. Still worth playing though.

The game was not buggy at release. If you were to play it on Windows XP, it would probably work fine. I think it has performance issues on Vista and Windows 7, sadly.

Funny that you mention Kotor. I just reinstalled it because it was great. Only thing is, it's indeed buggy as heck on Win7 (64?). I never had issues on XP. As it is, some of the buttons in the main menu aren't rendered and the resolution support is dismal. I'll have to find some widescreen hax to fix it.

That's the problem, you expect Steam to make it bugproof. Steam sucks when it comes to keeping older games working on newer OS and PCs. Do yourself a favour and get the fan patches, etc.

It works fine on my Vista computer. I don't consider it the greatest, but it did a lot of good things. At the time it was the first fully voice acted RPG. It was also the best Star Wars game at that time. The graphics were considered to be good as well, but they always get outdated in a few years.

kotor is still one of the best star wars games of all time its the BGoaT as picked by G4TV. this doesnt say much but G4TV even had to acknowledge how good it was.

It is a game for Star Wars fans.

Combat isnt its strong point, its star warsy atmosphere is. I didnt like the game either, but I can see why people like it. As for the bugs, there might be a patch to fix it.

seem to recall i had to do something to make it run on 1 core, which erased the crashing error which occurs on Win 7.

I never finished it, but I put in more than 12 hours and never had it crash or had any significant bugs on windows 7. Maybe it has problems with 64-bit.

Funny how Bioware's console betrayalton is considered one of the greatest games of all time.

I didn't like it. I'm not a Star Wars geek and I hate the combat, plus the premise was too boring to care about it. I played a couple of hours of KOTOR 2 and liked it a lot more, but still not enough to play the whole thing.

I hardly think that the opinions of someone that thought Call of Juarez: The Cartel deserved 8,5 matters. Man, you got awful taste.

I'm actually happy I can enjoy bargain bin games. I wish more people could do that, they'd have a lot more happiness in their lives.

Worked flawlessly on the original xbox on release. It is old though, so there probably is not native Windows 7 support.
