So many MMO's out there, does Warhammer Online even have a chance?

What I'm saying is, do you think WAR has the makings of another Age of Conan or WoW? Also, LotR Online is prettty popular too, right?

I wonder if WAR is coming in too late. Is this franchise really that popular? Of course the main important thing is how good the game is, but with so many people already playing WoW, AoC, and others like LotR Online or EverQuest 2, does Warhammer Online have a chance to become big?

In my personal opinion, the Warhammer universe never appealed to me. It feels too dark and suffocating. I'm talking about the concept and design not the games themselves. I like the RTS, for example, but the concept isn't as appealing to me as Starcraft for example. The style of fantasy in Warhammer isn't attractive, in other words.

Anyway, that's how I feel about it. But is this a MMO you're interested in?

Yes, the warhammer fanbase is HUEG, and it's being made by mythic, who made daoc, which was a very popular MMO.

But I'm not very interested in it.

Warhammer is huge and Mythic has a big fanbase thanks to Dark Age of Camelot - WAR is also unlike WoW, Conan and LotRO in that its focus is on large scale PvP, so it naturally attracts a different kind of player. It is still competing with the other MMOs, of course, but it is less of a direct competitor and has its own submarket.

As someone interested in PvP and competetive multiplayer, definitely

WoW was fun for a while, but the game's PvP was an obvious afterthought (hell, it took Blizzard ages to even implement battlegrounds.) PvP in WoW relies too heavily on gear and on how many hours one spends grinding away (for honor or drops in raids.) Skill only really plays a part when players are on even grounds gear-wise.

AoC..not sure what to say about this one. I purchased the game and played for a little while, and while I enjoyed it, I cancelled my subscription not but a few days ago. It'll surely improve in the future as more content is added, but the game is barren content-wise at this point, and the PvP is extremely unbalanced and chaotic, and simply not fun after a while. Maybe I'll return somewhere down the road, though.

Warhammer Online is looking to be the defining "PvP MMO" for the genre. The game is attempting to solve a lot of the historically huge issues with PvP in MMOs, such as the tanking mechanic and a tank's role (or lack thereof) in PvP. I haven't been following the game too closely, but with every preview and tidbit I see here and there, I'm anticipating its release more and more.

Depends, I am not going to buy the game. I played the Closed Beta and thought the game was horrible. I would much rather play WoW then that ANY DAY. But, side the fact.

AoC is great until level 50+ then you just grind and there is not enough quests and not enough things to do. I am sure that will change at some point. I do not plan on going any furthur with AoC though. I will just stick with WoW when I feel like playing.

Well, I would hope WoW would fair better by comparison, seeing as how you were playing something not yet ready for retail..

With that sort of attitude, I assume you didn't play in the AoC beta, else you probably wouldn't have purchased the game..

I played the Fileplanet PVP beta. World Of Warcrafts beta was not bad. WAR is terrible, the graphics are the worst of any MMO I have seen. It's practicly a COPY of WoW.

Who know's they may make it better.

Wait. Are you talking about the "beta" period leading up to World of Warcraft's launch?

If you're comparing that to Warhammer's Closed Beta, I can't help but laugh at you. World of Warcraft was effectively finished at that point, and Blizzard was using that "beta" period to test their server clusters.

WAR is terrible, the graphics are the worst of any MMO I have seen. It's practicly a COPY of WoW.Expo_Smacko

Oh, I see..a clueless World of Warcraft fanboy (Protip: it's actually the other way around -- Warcraft was inspired by and drew heavily from the Warhammer universe.) But thanks, that's all I needed to hear to write-off your opinion.

I'm trying to remain optimistic about Warhammer Online. Ive liked the previews and footage I've seen so far, and if I don't like this game, I have a feeling I'll probably give up on MMOs completely (it's already one of my lesser-played genres anyways.) The genre just keeps churning out boring, reptetive trash.

Reading comprehension.

Work on it, because that had nothing to do with what I just said.

Also, the forums are free, but there was an age requirement of 13 last I checked.

AoC will be stale by the time WAR's out, and a lot of current WoW players I know plan on switching when it comes out.

Warhammer universe too dark? Have you ever read the books? They're hilarious heh.

There is alot of very crappy MMOs out there, but not many decent ones.

The only two really high budget, epic, modern MMOs that are out there right now are WoW and more recently Age of Conan. It think there is room for Warhammer, many people I know/knew in WoW all said they were waiting for Warhammer.

See, there is alot of people who really want to PVP and they are very unhappy with it in WoW, they are just waiting for a game like Warhammer.

Oh and Warhammer is already a top seller in many stores for PC, just for pre-orders.....

i think, because of this fact, warhammer is going to compete mostly against guild wars. This is going to turn out rather interestingly, i think, because warhammer will most likely have a higher availablity of feature while guildwars, is obviously, free as well as having stood the test of time.

Even though it has pretty decent graphics, I wouldn't call Everquest 2 modern. It's not designed for mass appeal like WoW/AoC/Warhammer. It mainly caters to the hardcore.

im also really hoping that warhammer will turn out like Gunz, in the sense that you can play competitively and enjoy every aspect of the game regardless of your level. for example, when i started playing GunZ i played in the free channel every now and then. by the time i was level 8 or so i had the pleasure of defeating a level 43 character. this was something that really bugged me about WoW...you had to play it for freaking EVER to enjoy it. I am the kind of gamer that plays in bursts...a little Gunz here, stalker there, CoD 4 somewhere in between, perhaps a little counterstrike thrown in, with a dash of battlefield... i dont have 6 hours a day to play WoW and do all the high level raids. on the flipside, guildwars doesn't offer enough content/features...mainly because its F2P. What I'm really hoping Warhammer will finally do is draw ever kind of player. you know, make PvP fast and explosive for those who cant devote their lives to a game, and make it more tactical and involved for those who can.

It's Warhammer. It has a huge fanbase just on that. Plus Mythic is loved for DAOC and there RVR. As for the guy saying he was in beta, he's probably just lieing. Take what he says with a grain of salt.

Well Mythic kind of ruined DaoC with Trials of Atlantis so to say that they have 100% fanbase support is kind of odd. Same thing for Warhammer, its not 40k and its universe is not as captivating and is not going to gurantee fanbase support. I bet that most of the people interested in this game are not Mythic fans or Warhammer fans but WoW fans.

I currently play WoW on and off. LOTR doe snot appeal because most things would be lore breaking and it also has very very little pvp. Age of conan... looks boring. I dont get whats the goal in it? and juts doesnt appeal.

Warhammer has me fascinated. They are bringing something different with their realm wars which can conclude with city sacking, and i also love the gritty dark world of warhammer. I am a 100% subscriber from day 1

there's quite a hype to this game, so it's probably gonna quite well, commercially, upon official launch. but truth be told, i'm not seeing anything terribly exciting about WO -- i used to be quite interested, but the more i research into it ( via forums and beta impressions ) the more mediocre it seems to me.

It's a shame to see someone get into the beta who doesn't even respect the game when there are so many fans out there who would do their part to help the game who haven't been invited to the beta. I'm not one of those people; the only reason I want into the beta is to have something to do.

Anyway, I would like to say I'm extremely excited for WAR. It looks much more exciting than any of the mainstream MMO's currently available, and that excitement starts at level 1. Anyone can participate in the PvP, and their participation will have an effect in the highest tiers of the game. The world in the game is constantly evolving. I just fear that my computer won't be able to run it, seeing as how I wasn't able to run AoC on lowest settings. Anything that compares the graphics to WoW excites me because I was actually able to run that game.

well, it's a matter of opinion, but quite a number of beta impressions ( altho they are against regulations, but you know, they still float around ) gave me the feeling that WO lacks a tactile feeling to its gameplay. sound effect and animations ( not graphics ) need a ton of work, classes aren't well balanced, and even at its best, it's still just what the market is already teeming with.

i'm not saying it's definitely gonna suck -- it's still in beta, so certain short-comings are understandable. but it's not exactly in the early stage of the dev. as well, so the amount of problems to the game, at the moment, gives me an impression that Mythic may not be able to pull this off.

I use Warhammer Alliance forums, and from what I've read on there from devs and others is that all Mythic thinks about is balance and making the game fun. I personally don't think they'll release the game if Mythic doesn't like the quality.

I played WoW in beta and I had the same feelings you mentioned after playing that, look how it came out :P Blizzard is like Mythic in many ways, they want quality games.

actually, i would rather they focus on DAoC, which is a proven title with a cult status and still very much alive. A sequal or even an overhaul patch would bring the game so much further. becoz, let's face it, it's probably the best pvp mmorpg ever made and i don't see how we need another one built from scratch.

Nah, Mythic needs to make Warhammer. The lore for the universe is so great, if they do it justice it will be the greatest MMOG I've ever played.
