Because some people are not smart enough to differentiate between the OS and driver developers. Oblivion works well and so do all my games. All the problems are with the drivers from nvidia and nothing else. I heard ATI drivers work much better.

As long as you got at least 1GB of RAM you should be ok. However I'm no going to buy Vista anytime in the near future. XP works much better for me. With VISTA you do get Direct x 10 but most games aren't even using that yet.

I have to say vista has too much esseles junk just for your entertainment. I mean I'm all for a nice design but xp is so much better because of it's simple look. a lot of things in vista are just decorative and system consuming thats why I prefer XP.

Actually Vista is much faster than XP and you can always cutomize it just like XP. Vista uses new tech 'Aero' that uses yoru GPU so everything is much faster.

I have listened a lot when XP came out, people were saying "Oh my, XP is just decorative, consuming system RAM, and look at the min reqs.! It's just a Win 2000 with skin, bla bla bla".

I think Vista is not yet grounded by other companies than Microsoft. But soon it'll be the default market for PC gaming, and the hardware ever becomes even more powerfull... Microsoft rules the PC gaming market and the PC hardware specs. They set the defaults, they say when and why the hardware need to be upgraded.

There's nothing we can do. We live already in Cyberpunk. At least in Brazil it seems to be (violence and poverty mixed with big companies ruling the money and a weak government, that push stupid TV shows to make the people think it's all ok).

I'm just willing to buy a simple notebook to work (to a big or medium company, 'cause I can't be an artist to live here) and a Nintendo Wii and DS to have fun (Nintendo has true artists. Just like every japenese I met, they are smarter enough to make money from it).

Sorry for all this crap I've said, but go with Vista, it's the flow of the things, it'll be inevitable.

Hate and deny it or love and embrace it.

I have had mixed experiences with Vista. On some systems it runs like a dream and on others it doesn't. On the system in my sig I cannot get Vista to run stable at all. I use all the right drivers and everything and I will have horrible malfunctions. The most annoying one is when all of a sudden all of my hard drives start to disable themselves and give me read and write errors. I never get those in XP. I also get random bluescreens in games. Anyways XP runs great for now. I am sure once all the driver issues get sorted out everything will be great!

I recently bought a new HP laptop and fought tooth and nail for them to put XP on it but they wouldn't.  Since I got it and have had a chance to play with it and customize it (first think I killed was that side bar thing), I actually rather like it.

That being said I have two problems with Vistas.  First and foremost is the memory hogging, it uses up 300-350mb of memory at any given time with nothing running, but Norton's and AIM.  My biggest problem (and to be fair its more directed at nVidia than MS) is the complete lack of Geforce drivers.  There are ZERO supported Geforce Go! drivers available from nVidia and that is really pissing me off.  I am getting tired of crashes and bugs when I try and play game that go directly back to Geforce and DX driver issues.

Where there are people, there will be complaining. Never in life will you not see somebody complain about something. If they hate it so much why don't they try making an OS, oh thats right. They can't!

I disagree with your last statement. Just because you can't make a better version of something doesn't mean you shouldn't complain. if there's a car that explodes if it gets in a 25 mph crash, i don't have to know how to build another one to be justified in complaining.

My biggest issue with Vista is that without Dx10 hardware and games it's kinda useless for average gamer, top that with some compatibility issues and at least to me it's way too soon to get one.

The only problem I've had with vista AT ALL so far is I can't play Dawn of War, which is getting patched to work with vista/nvidia cards soon.  It's a great OS, and cheap too if you get OEM.

It also requires 600mb of memory while idle... Fast maybe, efficient no (atleast for now). In the end though vista will become quite popular.

Basically every complaint now will be dealt with that is totally detremental to the system actually being able to run or everyone would buy Mac. Some would say we should have gone Mac from the beginning but it's a bit late now. The idle requirements will probably never go down though since I'm sure Microsoft won't feel the need to deal with that but that is just a product of the new computers getting faster and more powerful.

I think the most important messages to get from this thread are...

Do you absolutely need vista right now? No.

Will it cause problems to play Oblivion? Maybe but the drivers are more likely the cause of that.

Will having it now be simply easier on you in the long run and cheaper? Most definetly

Besides, the worst thing that could happen is you encounter problems with running your computer and any of your games and end up joining all the other voices complaining about vista, that's not so bad right?

I dont understand this post at all, but I got my source from gamespot. When you run a program most of the memory Vista uses is put into running the game or in other words the 'desktop' process ceases to conserve memory. If you have enough memory it wont cease (Alt+tab will take you straight to desktop without any long pause for loading up memory). Video preformance has little to nothing to do with memory.

In theroy it is SUPPOSED to be faster... though it is not in practice. People saying it is as good or better then xp for gaming are dead wrong or they have really high end hardware. I have been using vista for about a month now and xp runs my games way better and BF2 doesnt run good at all. The difference is very noticable between the OS. Also vista has ALOT of issues not driver related as someone said. Alot of locks will happen alot of incompatibilities .... unless of course all you do is browse the internet you will not run into many problems if any.

The prefetch on vista really hasnt impressed me much and i cant tell a diff between xps prefetch (besides all my memory being at near 100% usage at all times)

Yes lots of negative talk about vista right now because it is not even on pair with xp .... its pretty though and i hope soon they fix all the issues

Whoa boy! You need to chill out. The problem is you are running Vista on computer which has the same specs as the ones on the space shuttle. Most of the arguments I have seen against Vista have been due to the user having a slow computer. General consensus is that if your computers hardware is older then two years, then don't even bother.

Yeah if you have really old hardware there isn't a point to running Vista but that is the point of Vista. It is made for newer systems. People complain too much about the memory usage. Yeah it uses shows more usage because of Aero or prefetch but that it is just using what is available. It releases memory as it is needed and that is what matters.
About Vista instability I will have to say that is FUD. I have been using Vista for 4 months without a lock up and talked to many people with Vista and the only lock ups I have come in contact with are do to poorly written drivers. That is only slightly Vista's fault for being harder to write drivers for but mostly falls on the company whose driver fails.
For the person that started the thread: Oblivion runs very smoothly on my machine with Vista so if you are an Nvidia machine you should be fine.

Exactly. Most, if not all problems are related to the crappy drivers (8800GTX). Other then that, the OS is rock solid.

I find it funny that people complain about their 4 year old Audigy 2 not working. They complain when their 7800AGP card is performing like crap under Vista. It's much easier to place the blame somewhere else other then themselves.

I haven't had any problems with Vista when running games. Of course, for every software ever created there are people who like and there are those who don't.
My personal opinion is that Vista is an excellent OS and you shouldn't have any problems with it. Don't worry too much about what others say, it's a great OS.

If I would buy a new computer it would be with vista on it too. Why? XP is the older version and although it might still be better than vista because of driver issues and stuff, it is the newer version which in like 5 months or something when DX10 releases and the budget ati and nvidia DX10 cards will release will be much better then XP. I compare it to CRT and TFT I mean I loved CRTS but TFTS are getting better and better and in only a few more years no one will be using crts anymore.
