And now its not working, I took it into my local computer shop and they were unable to retrieve the data with software. I later foud out that the Hard drive has a rip in it interally, is there anyway to recover the data evan though its phyically damaged? Ive only backed up 1 TB out of the 2 (the HD is full by the way) and I don't want to loose that 1TB of data that contains family photos etc.

Please help :(

What was the 'rip' part of?
If the actual platters were damaged, you probably have no chance of recovering any data whatsoever, but if only the logic board was damaged you could possibly buy a new one and re-assemble it, and attempt to recover data that way.

While I can't exactly help you with the data recovery...you're friend is at least offering to pay for the data recovery and purchase of a new drive right?

The good news is that unless your platters have basically become dust, you can get most of your dtaa back. The bad news is that if theres physical damage to the internal platters, your only option is to used specialized data recovery services which can run around $350-ish in your case. You can google "Data Recovery" and find several companies that offer services.I remember reading an article from a representative of one of those companies that was able to recover most of the data of a drive that someone drilled several holes through it.

A good data recovery company will attemtp to repair that portion of the drive, and by checking the frequency of changes in magnetic fields, it can roughly guess the data in there at a moderate success. Its what they do to get incriminating evidence from someone thats attempted to destroy their hard drives.

This is the reason I use velcro tape, I used it to tape my speakers in the back of my ford explorer so they won't move when im driving but I can pull them out when I need to

I used a smaller version of this velcro tape with an external HDD, it's on the side of my case, and is strong enough to keep it in place even if I shake the case

You should try it (on your next HDD), at least this way it will give you a second chance :)

take it to some data recovery company, wont be cheap though, be in the thousands. This is why you have everything save on two different drives, just in case.

It should be possible if the platters arn't damaged but it's not worth doing unless you're a company that cheaped out by not using RAID

Its could be external my girlfriend did the same to my 2tb drive.

This reminds me of when I caught my dog chewing on one of my hats. I beat him with the hat and know he's never even looked at a hat. Perhaps this may help you to get your gf to shy away from your expensive electronics.
