So, the PC version of Alice: Madness Returns requires Origin to run.

Interesting. I am installing the game as we speak, and there is a prompt to install Origin.

I have no doubt that all future EA titles will probably be doing this.

Positive or a negative? I guess time will tell. But reading the message boards, it seems that AMR suffers from many crippling bugs on the PC version. Guess the game has greater problems than integration with Origin.

I wished I bought the PS3 version when Amazon had it for $45!

A small negative IMO (already alot of digital download merchants/ apps). But understandable on their part.

Someone needs to make a prog that combines all the various download services into one place.

I dont like it. I dont want to have to have a bunch of different direct download programs on my pc. I wouldn't mind it if it was like battle.net where you dont need to install a program to play blizzard games you just need to log in.

I guess, you guys just like to hate, information comes after or never. This didn't start with Alice, it's been happening since BC 2...Origin is installed to authenticate the game after that you can even uninstall it, the game will run just fine without it, Origin isn't like Steam.

So this probably means it wont be coming to steam then? EA is doing what Valve has already done with their games, require a launcher/marketplace app for all their games. I already have one and don't need another. I don't see Origin being compatible with Steam's model. Are you supposed to log in to Steam, open your game, only to be directed to log in to Origin. When will they just believe that I've bought it already?

....it didn't happen with BC 2, DA 2, etc, do you honestly think you have a true motive there? and you'll eventually find out, if you read that is, Origin is not required to play games.

Exactly. I have a bunch of games on EADM. They change the name and people suddenly take notice and start the bashing. Go figure. :?

EA have been a pita for years, DA:O required me to make an EA account to play it and insisted on being logged in even though it has no online features and to be honest it was a bit much having to do the same thing to play mass effect 2 on my xbox. I wouldn't mind if their site and manager were well laid/thought out but they aren't... I gave up searching for patches for Crysis on their site and just downloaded them else where but I think if you want all this info and treat your customers like potential thieves the least you can do is make it worth their while.

To be fair here its not like its some small company that has suddenly turned greedy on us though, this is EA we are talking about and they have been this way a lot longer than Activision.

Soooo anyway... how is Origin? is it actually worth my while having it installed? give me enough features and perks and Ill gladly use it but I don't like it when there is no effort made to hide the fact from me that all I am good for is more money :P.

It's a download manager that recently got a chat function and an in game overlay like Steam for web browsing + chat, they might make it more with time, but at the end of the day it's still just a download manager, it's used to get and authenticate games, with no other uses (as for requirements, it uses exactly 75 mb of RAM, 0 CPU but you don't even have to run it after you download and/or authenticate your games).

I've never had a problem with third party activation so long as I can still buy the game retail. I'm fine with Origin, it just depends on how well it runs and how good its service is. Origin is still pretty new so i guess itll evolve into a better and better program like Steam did. But since Steam is already pretty advanced, i'm sticking with that.

When you launch the game it will search for updates and patch using a component of Origin. But the Origin client will not even start...

Haven't you guys bought any modern EA game?!

It is not just a name change, that is the first phase of Origin's implementation :-

So yeah right at the moment it is "just a download manager" but that is going to change.

This is all totally wrong. The game installs nothing dealing with Origin. You get a PROMPT to ACTIVATE the game on Origin and after that, it's done! What Origin install are you guys even talking about? The misinformation and band-wanging jumping here is atrocious. Everyone's just so quick to leap down EA's throats. They are a BUSINESS, if they want to compete with Steam, fine. You act like they're entitled to treat us like royalty, they treat everyone the same, meaning we (and console people) are all customers to them.

Ok maybe right now you can dl/install then close (stop) Origin to play your games, but later on since their adding Cloud saves/Achievements/Leaderboards/etc, you'll probably have to have Origin running in the back. Oh joy -.- now I will have to have Steam and Origin running the background when I'll be playing BF3 later this year... Let's see which other company will launch their own DD service? Ubisoft? Blizzard?

I'm not sure how many downloads will be required or not by companies, but I will say that a few games do have required download software, not necessarily by EA (and while you can uninstall after and continue to play the game, its still absolutely stupid and annoying). I don't have Origin yet, but I might when BF3 comes out. Hopefully its not a required download by then, too.

Umm... Did you happen to think that I chose those 2 cause I know they already have them. It also shows how split up PC DD services are already. Also... Protoss sucks.

Rules get in the way of that kind of progress... Someone would scream some BS monopoly. Even though they could be more accessible.

The way you say it sounds like exactly the impression you gave in your earlier post and the DD services are pretty much as dispersed as they can be, pretty much any major developer/publisher has digital distribution systems (personal).

Also...nobody likes you, Zerg ;) accept it.

EA won't get as much customers if they remain exclusive to Origin.

Well I have Alice. After you install it, you don't need Origin open to run the game. I've added the shortcut to steam and launch it from there. Origin never opens.

I wrote the post just as I was installing the game.

I apologize, everyone. Looks like I overreacted and posted a bit too early. Alice: Madness Returns requires activation via Origin, but it doesn't require an installation of Origin. My sincere apologies.
