intel V//V is to entertainment and media center desktops as Centrino is to notebooks.

Basically, it is just a marketing term for a predefined platform specification that's meant to make for a smooth, stable media center/home theater computer.

Part of the specification calls for a minimum of a dual-core processor, but in intel's case, that can still account for as little as a Pentium D, or even an HT-enabled Pentium4 processor. So on that alone, you can't just look at the "VIIV" part and epxect it to be a Core 2 Duo.

The processors might be, but that doesn't mean that the X2's and A64's are suddenly all that worse. The one thing that is to AMD Live's advantage is that - now that they are merged with ATi - they can give a better onboard graphics solution than the intel GMA garbage. And if Centrino is any indication, a lot of those "Intel VIIV" computers are probably sporting intel GMA video, which is going to be much, much worse for gaming than anything on the AMD/ATi side.
