Ivy bridge is expected to come out soon.. It is said that this will officially have support for pci.e gen 3 . There are motherboards out there that have pcie gen 3 but it cant be used(used as a gen 2 though). Ivy bridge is supposed to fit in 1155 socket but the chipset is different hence one would need a new mb anyways. ""So whats the point ? "" in getting a gen 3 motherboard.

Can anyone throw some light on this issue?

Thank you,

You can put an Ivybridge CPU in a Socket 1155 board. At which point the PCI-E 3.0 will be enabled (for all the good it'll do).

The light on the issue is that PCI-E 3.0 will be next to useless for 99.9% of gamers. The bandwidth restrictions on PCI-E 2.0 aren't nearly reached in most cases so 3.0 isn't necessary for most people.

Heck even a Dual gpu like the GTX 580 MARS does not get over saturated by Pci-e 2.0 at 8x limits.

the benefit is that you can now run pci-e 3 with 8 lanes at about the same speed as pci-e 2 with 16 lanes, so an 8/8 setup won't give you any performance issues.

It's been proven it doesn't over saturate at 4x. The difference was 1-2 fps.

PCIe 3.0 is virtually useless. Graphic cards haven't even utilized 2.0 yet. Kind of like having a SATA III connection on an HDD. No point in having it if the device itself is incapable of reaching those transfer speeds. Work great for SSD's though.

But i heard somewhere that the chipsets in 1155 are not going to be compatible with ivy bridge anyways so one would need a new mb anyways wont he? Thank you for the input on the pcie gen 3 issue. :-) helps a lot.

IB will use both 1155 and a new socket.

All Z68 chipsets will support Ivy Bridge CPU's through a BIOS update but only the latest revised P67's and H67's will have support.
