I'm on a Mac, so I hope the sequel to this comes to us through Steam, but anyway.
What on earth isthis game, other than a superb Half-Life mod?

Talking about the game bro, but thanks for the tip. :D Also, one of Darwin's theories. Nature would select animals with the most favorable traits for the environment, and those animals would pass on their genes, eventually leading to evolution.I thought Natural Selection was when you only ate "organic" foods. :P

Is Tremulous a ripoff of NS or is it the other way around?kdawg88
They're both offshoots of the Quake 3 mod called Gloom, though Natural selection was made before Tremulous.
To the TC, basically Natural selection is a multiplayer FPS/RTS hybrid. The human team is lead by a commander (RTS style) who places weapons, armours, waypoints and structures on the map for the rest of the team to utilize (in FPS view) as well as handling all the tech tree's and upgrades. The human team has to use teamwork to compete as lone wolfing will get you killed.
On the other hand the aliens have no commander and instead use a class of alien called the Gorge, which can build structures and support the more combat centric alien classes. The gameplay on the alien side is vastly different, focusing more on fast paced and stealthy lone wolf tactics (except for the last class which is a tank basically).
The game is progressed by capturing resource nodes which give off points that can be spent on upgrades and structures (and pretty much everything) on both teams. The game is won when the opposing team and their base is wiped out. It's an awesome game, easily the best Half-Life mod out there IMO. Even though it's past it's prime it's still played regularly on American, British and Australian servers to my knowledge.
Natural Selection is one of Half-Life's peak mods in terms of gameplay, graphics, and polish. Natural Selection 2 is a resurrection of the mod but in the form of a game, using the Source Engine to its max potential. They've been working on this for a LONG time and I imagine will be one of the best multiplayer games released since Counter-Strike: Source.KHAndAnime
They've ditched the Source Engine and created their own since it was causing them issues. The Alpha has been released to those who pre-ordered the Special Edition (which isn't on sale anymore), but last time I played it it was a laggy mess and not much of a game (much like the original Natural Selection's Alpha release). When it's ready I'm sure it's going to be a first class multiplayer game.

Really? That's a shame.[QUOTE="hypoty"][QUOTE="KHAndAnime"]Natural Selection is one of Half-Life's peak mods in terms of gameplay, graphics, and polish. Really? That's a shame.Alpha's almost always suck (Minecraft excluded). The game is under heavy development and after they get the networking and performance issues sorted out and they start adding gameplay features (which weren't entirely in the Alpha build) the game will be fine.

There's a Quake 3 version? Gloom was originally a Quake 2 mod..it had a pretty big community from what I remember.
Quite amazing for its time..had a lot of fun with that.
I've never played Natural Selection, surprisingly enough..but I've been really interested in NS2 mostly because I played and loved Gloom.

Well they used their current engine (called 'Spark') well before they started using the Source engine as it was designed to load Source engine media. They figured out that it's simpler just to use their in-house engine as their main and not as a middle-man as it causes them less issues and gives them more flexibility. It's looking very nice as well.

Sorry, I must have put a 3 in there by mistake. Yeah, Gloom was and still is an amazing mod. I remember I last played it a couple of years ago and it still had an active community. It's great to see it's legacy living on in both Tremulous and NS.
