Looks like at this point ATI is in some deep doo doo with the 3870 not outperforming the 8800GT out of the box.
Is ATI gonna be releasing a new card before the Nvidia releases the 9*** series?

if you didn't notice amd has played its game its been playing all year; put it in the price range where nvidia is weak. the 3850 is the same price a 8600gts and compeltly smashes it to bits. and the 3870 is cheaper than the 8800gt and not much slower
ATI doesn't need to outperform 8800GT and that they've gotten as close as they have bodes well for them. ATI right now is looking to the mid-range and lower-end market which is where they are really starting to beat Nvidia, in the meantime they are also working on R700 which should hopefully regain the performance crown for them.
ATI is headed in the right direction in more ways than Nvidia is right now actually..let me explain. The computer market is headed towards not just greater performance, but greater performance per watt and is moving towards increasingly inexpensive components. In this way DAAMIT has everything well under control.
Where are they generally focusing their resources right now? In the mid-range and low-end price points and thats where they can really shine. If they really commit to energy efficiency and inexpensive component prices then they will stand to sweep the floor when the tipping point is finally reached..and every indication is that its getting closer.
So by undercutting Intel/Nvidia and working to improve efficiency and cost to performance they are helping themselves out immensely, even if that means financial pains in the meantime.
[QUOTE="Wesker776"]AMD is preparing the HD3870 X2 for a January 2008 launch.
Two RV670's on the one PCB, with CrossFire support.

Any word on how much that beast is going to cost (£)?
I bet it will be listed for 700 USDas the MSRP, the 8800 GTX is still rediculously priced here in Canada at ~600 bucks online, so if the 3870 X2 is double and is going to be more powerful then the 8800 GTX, expect it to release at 700 USD MSRP, unless ATI is nice and releases it at a price point that makes it more competitive against the 8800 GTX which would be a smart move. Looking at the price of the current 3870, being only 240 CAD, I doubt an X2 version will run more then 500 CADbut you never know. The only way ATI is going to get more users is by releasing their best card only slightly more expensive but more powerful then Nvidia's top card which is the 8800 GTX Ultra (about 700 CAD).

exactly amd has the low - mid end cpu market and is now doing the same with the gpu market till they get out their new cpu/gpus. when you think that the hd3850 is the same price as the 8600gts and over 2x the performance that will hurt nvida when their 8600gts stop selling
well, I think that the next series of AMD/ATi GPUs will be to fight for the performance crown...
that seems to me because, once AMD got there hands on 55nm technology, they produced new series based on R600 core.
so for the next series, they will be developing whole new core based on 55nm,, just thoughts :D
