Seeing as how Ivy most likely won't be out until 2013, I'd wait until bulldozer and then choose between that and SB. Just remember something new is always around the corner so don't wait too long or you'll find yourself waiting longer.

They beat out the SB's a bit, reports saying around 15-20%. Apparently they do really well at gaming, plus come in many core sizes, like 4, 6, 8, 12...

Huh? Everyone and their dog has Ivy pegged for a March/April release. Where did you possibly hear about a ~9+ month delay?

Anyway, yeah, as Ivy is a "tick" in Intel's tick-tock strategy (ie ticks are die shrinks, tocks are new architectures) there isn't a whole lot for desktop users. There should be a modest clock-for-clock performance increase over SNB as well as slightly higher clocks (Anandtech estimated a ~10% total performance increase for the same price), but the big improvements (power consumption and iGPU performance) are obviously not as important for consumer desktops.

The one thing it could do is significantly better overclocking than SNB, but considering how well SNB already overclocks and how fast it is even at stock there isn't a whole lot of value in waiting ~6 months.

All rumors and no confirmed real world benchmarks, so lets wait till they release to see if they out perform SB. Bulldozer doesn't come in a 12 core cpu.

Consult with ionusx regarding the delay, but my point still stands. Even if he were to wait another 6 months for Ivy, then people would be telling him to wait for haswell or whatever AMD has up their sleeve.

The 12 core isn't branded as Bulldozer but it uses the same architecture. Bulldozer is actually based off of server CPU's.

You'd still have to get a socket g34 system for you opteron cpu, it would be a complete waste of money if were to be built for just general purposes.

Off course, anyone even remotely sane would know that. Nobody in their right mind would get one of those of general purpose. They have a very niche market.

Yeah, one of the posts he had a week or 2 ago said ivy wasn't coming around until 2013.

Ivy comes out the first half of 2012, and all these bulldozer benches we have seen are unconfirmed and we have been seeing the same crap for some time. I dont believe that BD will beat SB, it might come close to it, but I dont think so, but only time will tell.

anandtech has a big article on Ivybridge, since it comes out in the first half of next year, Intel has been showing it off. unlike AMD with bulldozer which they have not showed off anything or given us any numbers on it. I remember when bulldozer was supposed to come out in June... thats when I bought my 2500K, and I couldnt be happier.

Theres no such thing as future proofing, and if all you do is wait around something else will always be coming out around the corner, so if you want a new pc, just get one with whats out, and dont wait because there will like I said before, always be something coming out thats better.

Just get a 2500K, and if ivybridge is good, and they are faster than the 2500K by quite a bit you can always upgrade your cpu because Ivy is 1155 compatible (sandybridge socket)

The reason I didnt get the 2600K is because it does nothing for gaming and for $100 you can buy a better GPU or a SSD if you really want to with that money. by the time 8 threads will be useful in gaming the 2600K will be obsolete and something else will be out thats better.

No. Your i5 750 is still a top tier gaming cpu. You shouldn't need to upgrade for some time. While Sandy Bridge has better performance it wouldn't really be worth the money. Now, if you were still on a Core 2 setup it would be a worthwhile upgrade.

you could get 3.5ghz or more on that cpu. I would do it if I were you, every little bit helps, some even get them to 4ghz with a nice cooler.

Have you ever overclocked before? I recommend reading up on it with your chip before you do anything with it. I like the hyper 212+ because its a cheap and effective cooler, but I changed the stock fan on mine and added two 3000rpm fans on it (they never run at 3k rpm though) with a push pull setup.

I think i know how to slightly overclock. Change some settings in the BIOS and the multiplier. It said i was running 3.2ghz on CPU-Z last time i tried, but after running prime for a while it just got WAY too hot.

Search google for some overclocking guides specific to your gpu and preferably using the same mobo manufacturer. CPUz was showing you 3.2GHz because you have "Turbo Boost" enabled. Which is a feature on Intel's Core i series that gives a small overclock depending on the load. The Hyper 212+ is a popular cooler because it has good price to performance. The Corsair Hydro series (like the H100) are a popular all-in-one liquid cooling coolers, but they can be expensive.

Yea, i know what the turbo thing is :P but i really did oc it by my own, tried 3.0, 3.2, 3.4 etc but it just got way too hot in Prime.
