So why are graphic cards so essential to gaming?

I know its the specs and that but if the game can actully start, whats the problem, im a bit of a pc gaming noob lol, does it just effect the graphics(how good they look), prevent lag, or what? Thankss : )

i would look up graphics processor unit or video " " on wikipedia if i were you, to get a good idea on how they work, but basily the gpu performs the rendering of shaders just like the cpu performs number crunching processes, the more powerful your gpu - graphics card the more intense and high resolution textures you can run. if you attempt to run high quality textures on a underpowered card, you will result is bad framerate or even unplayable

also different generations of cards support dx10, differnet open gl lanuages and shader models.

i suggest you wiki " gpu, vpu, direct x, shaders, graphics acceleration"

ahh ok thanks so its like how detailed the game can be, with higher card more details at quicker speed basically.

a graphics card does graphical calculations, the faster the GPU the more calculations it can do thus the more FPS you get, thats a very simple version of it though.

The faster the graphics card is, the more it can calculate per second (shaders, verticies, textures, etc) The faster it can calculate, the faster your framerate will be. A low end graphics card and a high end both can output the same level of detail and quality of graphics, the difference is that the high end graphics card can calculate more things at a given time, meaning a faster and more playable framerate.

So newer and older cards can put out the same amounts of detail but newer cards just do it faster, ahh lol ok thanks guys
