umm... probably not a good idea. If there is a power cut or power surge you would be pretty screwed.

i've turned this pc off twice in the last 18 months - once was for an upgrade, the other was for a two week holiday i took

besides that, never turn it off - the very thought frightens me

it certainly won't harm the machine leaving it on, though - keeping electronic equipment turned on for extensive periods of time does not damage them, so long as they are adequately cooled, and surge protection is a smart move

You are more likely to burn your machine out cold starting it once a day than you are leaving it running. Standby is a wonderful thing, and good for your electric bill.

it's actually better to leave it on than to boot up everyday, because boot require huge amount of current.

Don't believe me, strap a multimeter to your power cord and watch the spike

I almost never turn mine off. Unless I need to restart it because of a new program/update installation it stays on at all times.

Then why the hell do I turn mine off several times a week. Damn.

As for your computer, I say it will be okay. Many people use torrents and most of the time they need more than one day to finish donwloading and I never seen anyone complain.

I restart mine every few days because it uses a lot of memory and when you restart it clears it. I hear it is pretty bad leaving it on all the time but...meh I do.

its fine. Like what many people have said, and i will say. Its bad for the enviroment. The only time i leave mine on all the time is when i'm uploading stuff to my website. Otherwise if i'm not at home or i'm asleep i keep it off.

trust me, turn it off. if you do leave it on, unles you have some serious cooling, and amazing virus and firewall protection, then no harm in leaving it on, but leaving it on will shorten its life, so says the machines.....and a national study over the course of leaving it on the computers died in a few years, 3-5. the on off ones never died. so it is just safer to turn it off. i turn mine off whenever i am not at it, and i even disconnect the internet. why? so nobody can acces my computer remotely, because no matter what you have if someone has the ip adress and name of you computer, theres a telnet. always better to be safe.

The only time that I turned my computer off (excluding power outages) was when I put in my new video card.  Its been about 3 years since I left it off.

3-5 years? a computer is only good for 3-5 yrs anyway. it needs to have upgrades after that amount of time. and for this environment crap, how many of you actually strive to save the environment? none of you do. leave it running if you have the software to keep it from being hacked.

I would definately recommend turning it off. Leaving electrical equipment on, particularly in computers will shorten its life. This is proven, and not a "probably". I always turn my computer off when I'm not using it. All of this "turning your computer off and on all the time will burn it out" stuff is absolute rubbish. That's what they're deisgned for, and the components of your system will not overhead or degenerate at the same rate as if they were left on 24/7. It's up to you what you do and if you chose to take heed of this information. You're computer will be better off if it off when you're not using it.

at work, the people running folding@ home or SETI @ home generally have computers running 24/7 for a few years, heh. being on 24/7 is only hard on things with moving parts... on your computer, it's pretty much limited to fans and the hard drives, assuming things are accessing the hard drives while it's on doing nothing. and it's hard on the electric bill, though it makes a pretty negligible impact compared to other things in the house.

I have nothing agenst saving the enviroment, but a PC really does not drain that much power.. leaving your lights off when your not using them is a better way then leaving your PC on.

Yes i can see how turning off a 40 or 100w lightbulb can conserve more energy than turning off a 350w to 1kw computer.

except most computers draw something like 100-200w at idle or 1-10w in standby, and if your computer's running at full load including the video card as you quoted - using around 300w of power - then you're probably playing a game, and there's not much point turning it off yet, is there? :D

my old machine, pentium 2, geforce 4, 256 mb of ram (currently a CS 1.6 server) gets turned off maybe once a month. and ive had it for well over 5 years and its still running strong my other rig, i gave to my brother, AMD 2800+, 1gb of RAM, nvidia 6800GS has been running for 2 years, only gets shut off when theres a lightning storm, or when he has to reboot after updates. the rig i built for my parrents, AMD 3500+, 2gb of RAM, Nvidia 7900GT (yes, a very nice rig to give to the parrents, but my dad needed something powerfull that can run photoshop really well, he is a cartoonest for a few of the local newspapers, and he has been published in magazines, and other things) has been running for over a year now, and i know they only turn it off when theres a lightning storm. my brand new rig, AM2 5000+, 2GB of RAM, 8800GTS has been running for nearly four months straight, only turned off when there are lightning storms, or when i have to reboot after updating, and its never turned off for over 1 hour. in conclusion, i pay a steep electricity bill, but not once has anything ever gone wrong with one of my computers after leaving it running for long periods of time.

Yeah same here...but I'll leave it on for big downloads. Truth is I've heard extensive arguments on both sides about leaving it on 24/7 and turning it off when not in use...so I treat it like any other device I turn it off when I'm not using it.
