I'm new to the RTS genre. I'm looking to get into it. Any starter games besides starcraft or warcraft?

Command and Conquer: Generals, simply amazing, great fun, and very easy to learn. Was my first as a matter of fact.

I would try AoE 2, it's a fairly old game, good none the less. But you will be able to pick it up cheap and saves you paying for the newer games, and not being a fan of the genre.

Command and conquer generals and LOTR battle for middle earth 2 are two really basic, but still fun RTS games.

Starcrafts the best in my opinion. But maybe you should try out some C&C games.

Dawn of War I/II, Warcraft III and Starcraft, Age of Empires II and Age of Mythology, Command and Conquer (entire series). Most of these are great beginner RTSs that work well for more core fans.

Rise of Nations is one of the easiest to understand. Also one of the best.

Your best bet would probably be the Command and Conquer series. They are usually more forgiving in terms of their learning curve and aren't really that micro intensive (just send a bunch of units, build up, repeat).

If you want an even more macro based game, Supreme Commander is an excellent choice. But because of Supcom's massive scale, the learning curve is rather harsh which to me adds only enjoyment to a game.

But honestly, if you want to play the best strategy game, arguably, it would be StarCraft. WarCraft is also excellent for microing, but many find microing in Warcraft to be difficult so they end up playing DotA or other derivatives in it. A few, not all.
