I'm upgrading my P4 HT PC to a newer model for gaming; but since i'm kinda backward in the technical department i'd like some opinions and advice from the more wise ones here on the board :P

I'm basically getting four things: a motherboard, Processor, ram and graphics card. I've listed below what I hope to get:

Motherboard: http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/dp35dp/dp35dp-overview.htm

Processor: http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sspec=slacr

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220174

Gfx card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102759
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150254&Tpk=xfx%2b8800%2bgt

I've more or less decided on the parts and I'm only having two issues now:

1)The motherboard i've listed is an intel one (Which was recommended to me by the PC store guy) but from what I hear you can't overclock intel boards; so i'm hoping to get a motherboard which can be over clocked (provided i'm right about the intel over clocking thing).

I have absolutely no idea what motherboard to get nor am I aware of which brands to go for in the strict sense. I know Gigabyte is good for over clocking but it is not available where I live (sucks living in a developing country at times  ). I have an option among Asus, MSI and Intel boards. There are more but these I believe are the more reliable ones. I plan to use my rig for above average gaming, college work, Internet and quite possibly video editing (the last is a remote possibility but thought i'd mention it).

Moreover, I plan to use only one graphics card so I won't need to bother getting a motherboard which supports SLI or Crossfire which will only cost me more as well.

2) The second issue I have is that i'm not sure which graphics card to get: the 8800 GT or the HD 4850. I know the benchmarks prove that the latter is quite superior to the former in terms of performance but the heat factor for the radeon card is a serious dis-incentive for me to not get it; not to mention the fact that I can only get the HD 4850 from HIS and Force 3d manufacturers, both of which are honk kong based (I've had bad experience from the Nvidia cards i got from Honk Kong based firms) and hence my reluctance to buy from em. The Nvidia card on the other hand has XFX and BFG manufacturers available so i'm leaning more towards this card.

Moreover, since i've never bought ATI cards before i'd appreciate it if you could recommend some decent mfgs for this card.

I currently have a PSU of 600 watts:
PSU: http://www.coolermaster.com/products/product.php?language=en&act=detail&tbcate=22&id=51

So I doubt the power will be an issue. Feel free to criticize and give suggestions on the other stuff as well as you see fit. If anything else comes up, I'll just post it then.

Thanks in advance :D

I don't know what your budget is for a motherboard, so this would work with what you have picked:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131278 I would go with the HIS HD4850.

Thanks for the recommendation.

My budget is somewhere around $80-100 for the motherboard. I've already decided to go for the 8800 GT since it has less chances of getting fried (its quite hot where I live) so all I need to look for is the motherboard. I'd appreciate it if you could recommend an MSI one if possible

Thanks in advance

The HD 4850 is only available by Force 3d and HIS manufacturers (both Honk Kong based I believe) and with the heat factor involved I'm a bit reluctant to get it even though I know it is quite better than the 8800 GT. If someone has any experience with these manufacturers then perhaps i could look into it. Oh and by being hot I meant it is not unusual for the temperature to hit around 45-48 C in the summers :)

ok what parts do you have currently and what parts are you going to upgrade. Also what is the total budget for the upgrade. And outside temps shouldn't matter for a PC, as long as the inside is ~76 or less your comp should be fine with an after market heatsink and a couple of case fans.

Currently what I have in layman (that would be me :) ) terms is:

P4 3 GHZ HT

Intel Motherboard D915GEV

6600 GT

1GB Ram

600W Power supply of Cooler Master (not sure how i'm supposed to list this but here's the link just in case: http://www.coolermaster.com/products/product.php?language=en&act=detail&tbcate=22&id=51)

I intend to upgrade my motherboard, ram, processor and graphics card. I can easily purchase the mentioned ram and processor in my first post. For the motherboard, I could go upto a maximum of $100. But the catch is that only MSI and intel motherboards are available where I live (Asus is present but its not guaranteed that i'll get the required product of that manufacturer); the rest are asian mannufacturers. So i'd go for an MSI motherboard if possible. Moreover, I don't need Crossfire or SLI support since I won't need it; plus it will be cut down on costs for me.

As far as the gfx card is concerned, I'm reluctant to get the HD 4850 by HIS or Force 3d manufacturers since both are asian based (my 6600 GT is asian based as well: Inno 3d and I have to say i'm not impressed with the overall product; nor would I recommend it to anyone else.) and i've yet to hear of someone who has anything good to say about em; I'd prefer to go for an amercian brand since i'll have to live with my intended rig for quite a while.

Meh...seems like i've made a mess of the whole topic but if this problem gets solved it will all have been worth it :P

Aren't all Nvidia and ATI partners from Taiwan ? Afaik all the video cards are made in Taiwan and shipped to other parts of the world. Or are you worried that if a problem occurs you have to ship your card to Asia ? All the reference HD4800 cards are built by ATI, the only differences are the sticker and the warranty length.

Shipping would'nt be a problem for me since i'm from Asia myself (though i'm not sure if i'll be able to avail that service where I live). I was under the impression that certain things like the warranty, the cooling (esp for the heated HD 4850) and such things would be considerably better by the american based mfgs. But if the overall quality of the asian firm based cards is not much different then i'll go for it; its just that after reading on the forums you kind of get into the stereotype that only go for EVGA nvidia cards since they offer lifetime warranty; or similarly go for XFX or BFG and so on. Plus I can't afford to get after market heat sink and hence I try to keep the side of my casing open for extra ventilation.

Do i have to make an account in order to see that? Cause I'm not from the States and I can't seem to make an account due to the zip code and state being inconsistent with each other.
