I'm looking to upgrade my PC. I'd like to play most games that are available now. Preferably on high settings, but I'm on a limited budget so I'm willing to sacrifice high settings for smooth play. Here's my specs now.

Gigabit GA-H55M-S2H (Intel H55) Motherboard.

Intel Core I3 530 2.93Ghz Processor. I may upgrade this in the near future also.

4GB - OCZ PC3 - 1066 Platinum RAM.

Thermaltake V3 Black Edition ATX Mid Tower with and Ultra LS400 Lifetime series 400W Power Supply. (Will probably have to upgrade this).

Windows 7 64 Bit.

Right now my budget for a new video card is around $150. I've been looking at the Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 1GB DDR5 card. What does everyone think about adding this card? IF not this card then which one would be a good one in the same price range? Like I said I'm not looking to have a screaming system, just one that will play a lot of games well. Thanks

Shake a few trees in the hope something falls out and get a GTX560ti or a HD6870...

How much of a difference is it between a HD 6850 and a HD 6870 performance wise?

That's alright too, but I'd search for an MSI HAWK edition in that case -if you can still find 'em new retail...

Considering you can find a 6870 for as low as $165 after rebate at NewEgg, maybe that's the way to go...

At $150 the Hd 6850 is the one to get. But I'd save an extra $40 and pick up a HD 6870 or GTX 560 from Nvidia.

Always check Tom's hardware! :)

You must first upgrade your power supply. Get something in the lines of a 450-500W Antec,OCZ or any other decent brand for about $50-60 and get a 6850 for $130-140. You cant go wrong with that card. Most games high or mostly high settings and 1080p

i had an i3 -530 before this system, i also had a hd 5770 in it. You will be able to play everything on very high on 720 p. Maybe metro 2033 and crysis you will have to set the shadows to high instead of very high (but these are the heaviest games), also 2x aa instead of 4x aa

Thanks everybody for all your help and advice, and especially to all who provided links.

I used to know all about video cards, but I got out of PC gaming for a few years and now all the numbers just seem to jumble together so it's hard to know what the best card is for the money. without the help of great gamers like you all. I think I'm going to upgrade the power supply and go with the 6870. Amazon has one for $165 with a $20 rebate. I can't beat that, Again thanks to all.

Hey guys just a quick additional question. I think I may have another option but I wanted to run it by everyone first.

Someone recommended a Radeon HD 6670 GDDR5 1GB card and it appears I wouldn't need to upgrade my PSU on this card.

I'm thinking about doing that and then next year building a new system from scratch and giving this one to my daughter. What does everyone think?

Is the 6670 a good card? I looked around on the net and it seems to get really good reviews.

I know it's not a 6850, but then it is cheaper, and I won't have to spend another $40 or more for a good PSU.

Well since you are about to build a new pc sure go for it. 6670 its quite cheap and will allow you to play most games at high settings at 720p ( dont expect 60fps and antialising though in demanding games ) while in a few games ( namely Metro and BF3 ) probably you will have to settle to mostly medium settings

I just wanted to say that I heard Nvidia is coming out with some new stuff around March, so I'll be waiting until then for some prices to drop because of it.

I say that's a better idea. 6670 will run games fine and you'll then get to enjoy a new pc :)

I've been mainly playing games on consoles for the last few years so anything will be a step up :P

I just mainly want to be able to play games like The Witcher 2, and Diablo 3 when it comes out. It doesn't have to be on max settings just smooth and look good. Thanks for the info.

well for diablo 3 i dont think you will have troubles maxing the game even on 1080p As for Witcher 2 i guess medium settings and 720p are ok

well yeah but since you are gonna be building a new pc like you said i think a $80-90 6670 is wiser choice. It should suffice for most games at 720p and high settings ( at least on multiplats that are on consoles as well that card wont have any problems playing them at high settings )

6850 gets you max settings @ 1080p on everything

6670 gets you medium @ 900p on demanding games, high-max on console ports

I played Starcraft 2 on my dad's PC after I put a 5670 in it. SC2 ran perfectly with medium/high settings and ultra textures, so a 6670 should work just fine for you...

Thanks for all the help. I just bought the 6670 and even if a few games aren't on high I can live with that for the time being. It's almost $100 cheaper this way, and I can put that into a bigger and badder machine in a half a year or so.
