After I turn my system on and when the Gateway boot screen is finished booting all that shows up is a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner. It is just a cursor, it doesnt have a 'C:' or anything of that type to let me know what the cursor belongs to. And it doesnt let me type anything in.

If anyone has any idea what the problem is please let me know.

Make sure you remove your CD-ROM's and/or Floppy Disks. If that doesn't do it, then you may want to check the BIOS and set the boot priority to the HDD. If that doesn't do it, then you may want to open the case on and see if the HDD cable is securely fastened.

You may need to change your boot priority to the HDD. Also what motherboard is in your computer?

I have no idea. The computer is 10 years old if that helps. I'll try switching it over to the HDD.

If it has a virus do you have any idea what software I could buy that would fix the problem? I tried switching it over to the hard drive and the same thing happened btw.

Sound like it's corrupt, if the boot was setup wrongly it should ask you to insert a disk or if it's really wrong just a completely blank screen. It could be a virus though it may be your drive is just old and is on it's last legs. If it's corrupt all you can do is reload it, no antivirus will help you there.

So all I have to do is reinstall the OS? Will that cause any loss of data?

Depends. What OS is the system running?

If you have a standard Windows XP installation disc, you can attempt a repair installation by booting off the CD. Choose to Setup Windows (not the Recovery Console) - the setup program should find your existing Windows installation IF the hard drive is still OK. At that point, choose the option to repair Windows. This will not erase the data on your drive.

If the repair installation fails, you'll probably have to format the drive and install Windows from scratch. Then you WILL lose your data if you don't attempt to back it up first.
